Hoosiers bounce back from two straight losses thanks to Wilkerson

Indiana's only losses this season came against Big 10 opponent Minnesota (73-64) on Dec. 3 and at home against Louisville (87-78) on Dec. 6. Lamar Wilkerson led the way against Penn State with a career-high 44 points on 10-of-15 shooting from three-point range. The Hoosiers shot 69% from the field and 55% from long range. They also scored 100 points or more for the fourth time this season. The 6-6 wing is a transfer from Sam Houston State, who averaged 20.5 points last season and 18.8 points this season, while shooting 43.2% from long range.

The Hoosiers are ranked 21st by KenPom, 38th in Adjusted Offense, and 21st in Adjusted Defense. Forward Tucker DeVries adds 17.2 points and 3.4 assists, while shooting 40.7% from long range. IU shoots 38.2% from long range (36th) and 50.3% from the field (30th). DeVries is a West Virginia transfer who averaged 14.9 points per game last season for the Mountaineers. His father, Darian DeVries, took over as the head coach at Indiana after stints at Drake and West Virginia.

Wildcats have struggled against stronger competition

Kentucky fans have very little patience for mediocrity. They have almost no patience with good teams that don't make Final Fours. The Wildcats have not made a Final Four since 2014-15, when John Calipari had this program dominant. Calipari is now at Arkansas, while Mark Pope has taken over. Last season, they went 24-12 and 10-8 in the SEC before losing in the NCAA Tournament regional semifinals. Pope's team is struggling this season as they've lost four games to the likes of North Carolina (67-64), Gonzaga (94-59), Michigan State (83-66), and to rival Louisville (96-88).

Kentucky issues are up front with 6-11 Jayden Quantance (knee), having missed the entire season. He averaged 9.4ppg and 7.9 rebounds with Arizona State last season. Mouhamed Dioubate (6-7, 220), an Alabama transfer, adds 11.6 points and 5.8 rebounds this season, but has missed the last five games. Otega Oweh leads the Wildcats with 14.4 points while shooting 50.5% from the field. Guard Denzel Aberdeen adds 12.4 points and 3.5 assists. The Wildcats are ranked 20th overall by KenPom, 30th in Adjusted Offense and 27th in Adjusted Defense.

Key Injuries for Kentucky:

  • F Mouhamed Dioubate (ankle) is questionable. Has missed the last five games. Avg. 11.6ppg and 5.8rpg.

Spread Pick for Indiana vs. Kentucky

Indiana vs. Kentucky Pick and Prediction

  • Indiana +4.5 (5 units)

Kentucky is reeling right now. They were embarrassed by Gonzaga last Friday in Nashville, allowing the Zags to shoot 57% from the field. Wilkerson showed potential of going off earlier in the season offensively and is a big-time scorer that can push Indiana to the NCAA Tournament and beyond. This is a good Kentucky team that lacks star power. Kentucky has one quality big man in freshman Malachi Moreno, who is still adjusting to the college game. This should be a good one but the Hoosiers are the better team and Rupp Arena is not as intimidating as it used to be.

Over/Under Pick for Indiana vs. Kentucky

  • Over 151.5 (5 units)

Kentucky is averaging 85.5 points per game (91.7 points at home) and the Hoosiers are averaging 88.2 points per game. Indiana has scored 100 or more points in four games this season. The Hoosiers have gone over in two straight and three of their last four games.  The Wildcats are also shooting 53.% from the field at home.
