On Wednesday, the Iowa Hawkeyes will play the Maryland Terrapins in a Big 10 Conference basketball game, and we have you ready to go with our Iowa vs. Maryland prediction, odds, and preview. Tip-off from College Park, MD, is at 6:00 p.m. ET.

The Hawkeyes are 10.5-point spread favorites, and the game total is 141.5 points scored.

The Hawkeyes beat the Terps 83-64 on December 6 as 10.5-point favorites. Iowa shot 54 percent from the field, including 50 percent from three-point distance, and outscored Maryland 44-20 in the paint. The Terrapins shot 36 percent overall. Iowa is 6-4 straight-up (5-5 ATS) in its last ten matchups with Maryland. The over was 6-4 in those games. Hawkeyes are building momentum

Iowa (18-5 SU, 15-8 ATS, and 15-8 O/U) beat Northwestern 76-70 on Sunday, failing to cover the spread as 11.5-point betting favorites. The Hawkeyes, who are 8-4 in Big Ten play this season, have now reeled off six straight wins. While it wasn't their most efficient shooting performance (45% overall and 31% from three), they muscled their way to the foul line (23-for-29 FT shooting). Iowa also outrebounded Northwestern 34-22 with 13 offensive rebounds and outscored them 36-20 in the paint.

The Hawkeyes are ranked 18th nationally by KenPom, including 20th in offensive efficiency and 23rd in defensive efficiency. They are led by first-year coach Ben McCollum, who was 31-4 last season at Drake. Iowa scores 81.7 points per game (101st) on 51.0 percent shooting (13th), including 37.9 percent from deep (26th). Defensively, they allow 66.7 points per game (21st) on 44.4 percent shooting (211th), including 31.5 percent from long range (77th).

McCollum brought several Bulldog transfers with him to Ames, including their top two scorers, senior guards Bennett Stirtz (19.9 PPG and 4.8 APG) and Tavion Banks (10.9 PPG and 4.4 RPG). A few other Hawkeyes to watch in Wednesday's Big Ten game against Maryland are junior forward Alvaro Folgueiras (8.7 PPG and 3.9 RPG), freshman forward Cooper Koch (7.0 PPG and 3.3 RPG), and junior forward Cam Manyawu (6.6 PPG and 4.3 RPG).

Iowa Hawkeyes Injury Report:

  • No injuries.

Maryland is coming off an upset victory

Maryland (9-14 SU, 9-14 ATS, and 14-9 O/U) defeated Minnesota 67-60 at The Barn on Sunday, breaking a four-game losing streak. The Terps, who are 2-10 in conference play, shot 50 percent from the field and outscored the Golden Gophers 28-10 in the paint. They also won the rebounding battle 31-28. Minnesota hit 14 threes but lacked the interior presence necessary to win the competitive game.

The Terps had a 27-9 record last season, including 14-6 inΒ Big Ten play (tied for second place). As a four-seed in the NCAA Tournament, Maryland reached the Sweet 16, where it lost to eventual champion Florida, 87-71. After the postseason run, head coach Kevin Willard left to take the job at Villanova. UMD features a new-look roster this season, including ten transfers and five frosh. Head coach Buzz Williams, who was 120-73 in six seasons at Texas A&M, leads a Terrapins team that has struggled in his first season (ranked 139th nationally by KenPom).

Williams brought four Aggies with him to College Park: Pharrel Payne (17.5 PPG and 7.2 RPG), Andre Mills (9.2 PPG and 3.7 RPG),Β Solomon Washington (10.1 PPG and 8.8 RPG), and George Turkson Jr. (1.3 PPG). The senior forward Payne was the most impactful addition, but he has played in just ten games and hasn't suited up since early December. The other key transfer players are David Coit (Kansas), Myles Rice (Indiana), Elijah Saunders (Virginia), and Isaiah Watts (Washington State). Coit leads the Terps in scoring (15.8 PPG), while Saunders (8.9 PPG and 4.1 RPG) and Rice (5.6 PPG) are role players. Freshman guard Darius Adams (11.7 PPG and 3.7 RPG) is another player to watch against Iowa.

Maryland Terrapins Injury Report:

  • Payne remains sidelined (knee), and Rice is questionable (undisclosed) to play against Iowa.

Iowa vs. Maryland Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Iowa vs. Maryland

  • Hawkeyes -10.5 (5 Units)

Iowa can beat you in a variety of ways offensively. They are efficient inside the arc (13th in 2PT%) and beyond it (21st in 3PT%), as they value near-proximity shots (52nd-highest NP attempt rate) the most, but still shoot high percentages from the mid-range and three-point distance. While they don't get to the foul line a lot, they also knock down 76.9 percent of their free throws. Maryland struggles defensively, as it's average around the rim, below-average in the mid range, and awful beyond the arc (360th in opponent 3PT%). The Terps also commit too many fouls (16th in the Big Ten in fouls committed in conference play this season). I just don't see how they contain the Hawkeyes' scorers.

On the other end of the court, Iowa is stout on the perimeter. The Hawkeyes don't allow their opponents to get hot from three-point range, and rank 43rd nationally in mid-range defense versus the average opponent, per Haslametrics. While they can be soft around the rim, they don't give up many shots in the paint. On top of that, they rarely give up quick second-chance points off offensive rebounds (ninth-fewest nationally), and they won't be dominated on the glass by the Terrapins, anyway.

The Hawkeyes beat the Terps by 19 earlier this season and enter Wednesday's matchup on a six-game winning streak. I anticipate a similar outcome in the rematch, so bet on Iowa to cover the 10.5-point spread.

Over/Under Pick for Iowa vs. Maryland

  • Over 141.5 (4 Units)

The total appears pretty spot-on, but I like the over. Maryland is a defensive sieve, ranking 359th nationally in defensive momentum, per Haslametrics. The Terps are also careless with the basketball on offense (256th in turnover percentage and 234th in quick points surrendered off breakaway steals), allowing their opponents to score easy buckets in transition, as the Hawkeyes did in the first matchup (18 turnovers that led to 21 Hawkeye points).

While I don't believe the home team can keep the score close to cover the spread, they have enough of an offensive edge to push the total over 141 points against an Iowa team ranked 355th in defensive momentum. The Terrapins get to the free-throw line often (41st in FT rate), as they did in the previous game versus Iowa (38 foul shots), and should have some success around the rim against a Hawkeyes squad ranked 239th in near-proximity defense versus the average opponent. I also expect that Maryland will find it easier to score late in the game, as Iowa will likely pull its starters and play more lax defense with a commanding lead.
