The Beach meet the Aztecs for the first time since November 14, 2023, when San Diego State beat Long Beach State 88-76 as a 13.5-point home favorite. The Aztecs are undefeated in eight straight meetings with the Beach, and Long Beach State has only covered twice during that stretch.

Long Beach State was awful in 2024-25
The Long Beach State Beach enter the second year with Chris Acker as their head coach. Last season, Acker’s team went just 7-25 overall and 3-17 in conference play. The Beach finished the season with a 15-game losing streak and failed to qualify for the Big West Championship Tournament.

LBSU struggled on both sides of the ball in 2024-25. The Beach ranked 285th in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency (100.6 points per 100 possessions) and 317th in adjusted defensive efficiency (114.1). They played at a slow pace, recording just 64.3 possessions per 40 minutes (332nd in the country).
The Beach return 10.0% of minutes and 7.0% of scoring from their 2024-25 roster. They lost the top two scorers in the transfer portal, as Devin Askew (18.9 PPG, 4.5 APG) joined Villanova and TJ Wainwright (13.4 PPG) transferred to Pacific.
Sophomore guard Isaiah Lewis (9.4 PPG and 3.0 APG with Little Rock) should drive LBSU’s offense this season. Senior guard Shaquil Bender tallied 11.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game at Manhattan last season, while sophomore forward Petar Majstorovic played 31 games at Syracuse, averaging 2.6 points and 3.2 boards.
San Diego State hopes for another successful season
The San Diego State Aztecs enter their ninth year with Brian Dutcher at the helm. They’ve won at least 21 games in each of the previous eight seasons while reaching the NCAA Tournament six times during that span.
Last season, the Aztecs went 21-10 overall and 14-6 in conference play. They lost to Boise State 62-52 in the Mountain West Championship quarterfinal and suffered a 95-68 defeat against North Carolina in the March Madness First Four. SDSU ranked 125th in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency (108.9) and 20th in adjusted defensive efficiency (95.8).
The Aztecs return 60.6% of minutes and 59.9% of scoring from their 2024-25 roster. Senior guard Nick Boyd (13.4 PPG, 3.9 APG) transferred to Wisconsin, but Miles Byrd (12.3 PPG, 4.4 RPG) is back for his junior year.
Magoon Gwath is back, too. The seven-footer averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game in his sophomore season. Senior guard Sean Newman Jr. (9.9 PPG, 7.9 APG) arrived from Louisiana Tech via the transfer portal, and he was sixth in the nation in assists per game last season.
Long Beach State vs. San Diego State Pick
Spread Pick for Long Beach State vs. San Diego State
- San Diego State (4 units)
The Beach have a lot of new players on their roster. LBSU will need some time to gel, so I can only doubt the Beach’s chances to hang around against the Aztecs.
SDSU will put together another elite defensive effort, and with Sean Newman Jr. at point guard, the Aztecs’ offense might be one of the pleasant surprises in 2025-26.
The Aztecs return some of their key players from the previous season and have a lot of depth, so I will lay points with SDSU. Don’t forget that Long Beach State was one of the worst teams in the country last season.
Over/Under Pick for Long Beach State vs. San Diego State
- Under (4 units)
As I noted, LBSU played at a slow pace last season. I don’t think that will change a lot in 2025-26, especially not in a game like this one. The Aztecs have been one of the best defensive units in the nation for years.
San Diego State ranked 258th in the country in pace last season, tallying 66.1 possessions per 40 minutes. I expect the Aztecs to force the Beach into a lot of turnovers and win this game comfortably.
The Beach might struggle to score enough to push the total over the line. On the other hand, their defense won’t impress. Anyway, I have to take the under.
