Manhattan hopes to stay on track
The Manhattan Jaspers (10-16; 9-15-1 ATS; 11-14 O/U) have only won two of their previous eight games overall (2-5-1 ATS). Last Saturday, they snapped a two-game skid. After consecutive defeats against Mount St. Mary’s 72-65 on the road and Saint Peter’s 80-75 at home, the Jaspers beat Sacred Heart 80-68 in front of the home fans.

Manhattan outscored Sacred Heart 43-24 in the second half. The Jaspers held the Pioneers to 39.3% shooting from the field. Manhattan made 44.3% of its field goals (8-for-24 from deep) while committing just eight turnovers, and junior guard Jaden Winston led the charge with 21 points, four assists, and three rebounds.
Winston has done a great job this season, averaging 15.6 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.0 rebounds. Junior guard Devin Dinkins tallies 12.8 points and 2.7 assists per game, and sophomore forward Fraser Roxburgh adds 11.4 points and 5.8 rebounds a night.
Manhattan is 6-9 in conference play and No. 330 in the NCAA NET Rankings. The Jaspers score 103.7 points per 100 possessions (257th in the nation) while surrendering a whopping 121.6 points in return (357th). Their defense is 332nd in the country in 3-point percentage (37.1%).
Niagara continues to struggle
The Niagara Purple Eagles (6-18; 10-13 ATS; 9-14 O/U) have only won one of their previous seven games overall (5-2 ATS). After stopping their five-game slide with a 65-56 home victory over Canisius, the Purple Eagles suffered a 56-55 road defeat at Quinnipiac this past Saturday.
Niagara held Quinnipiac to 30.0% shooting from the field, but the Bobcats hit a triple with 2.2 seconds left on the clock to see off the Purple Eagles’ challenge. The Purple Eagles made 40.8% of their field goals (8-for-25 from deep). However, they allowed 19 offensive rebounds and committed three more turnovers than Quinnipiac (15-12).
Sophomore forward Will Shortt tortured Quinnipiac for 14 points and 11 rebounds. Shortt tallies just 5.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Junior guard Justin Page leads the way for Niagara with 12.1 points and 2.5 assists, while senior forward Justin Hawkins posts 8.5 points and 3.4 boards a night. Page didn’t play last Saturday and is questionable for Friday’s clash against Manhattan.
Niagara is 3-11 in conference play and No. 345 in the NCAA NET Rankings. The Purple Eagles score just 97.8 points per 100 possessions (344th) while yielding 115.5 points in return (307th). The Eagles make 33.5% of their shots from deep (200th) and rank 257th in opposing 3-point percentage (35.4%).
Manhattan vs. Niagara Pick
Spread Pick for Manhattan vs. Niagara
- Manhattan +2.5 (5 units)
I noted how bad the Jaspers’ defense has been this season. But Niagara is not a good defensive team by any stretch of the imagination, and the Jaspers arguably have more offensive weapons than the Purple Eagles, who might miss their leading scorer. Justin Page is a lone Purple Eagle with points per game in double figures.
The Jaspers take good care of the ball, whereas the Purple Eagles are quite turnover-prone. Manhattan struggles on the defensive glass, but Niagara has been awful on the offensive glass thus far. Hereof, I can only look at Manhattan in this game.
Last month, the Jaspers outscored the Purple Eagles 43-32 in the second half. Manhattan went 19-for-21 from the foul line and committed a paltry five turnovers. On the other side, Niagara earned just seven free throws (6-for-7) and committed 10 turnovers. Manhattan outrebounded Niagara 32-27.
Over/Under Pick for Manhattan vs. Niagara
- Over 137.5 (5 units)
Niagara plays at the second-slowest pace in the country, notching 62.1 possessions per 40 minutes. In conference play, the Purple Eagles tally just 61.8 possessions per 40 minutes, while the Jaspers register 68.7 possessions per 40 minutes (3rd in the MAAC).
Despite Niagara’s pace of play, I will take the over. The Purple Eagles turn the ball over a lot, and the Jaspers will look to push the ball in transition as much as possible. Manhattan wants to force Niagara to run up and down the floor, and the Jaspers will attack the rim a lot.
Moreover, Manhattan’s 3-point defense is awful, and Niagara will hit some shots from deep. These two teams combined for 149 points in January, and Niagara went 10-for-25 from downtown. The over is 5-1 in the previous six encounters between Niagara and Manhattan.
