Terps struggling with injuries
Maryland needed a 41-point performance from David Coit, a Kansas transfer, who led the team to a 95-90 overtime win over Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday. That performance tied him with Gene Shue, Len Bias and Greivis Vasquez for the third-most points in program history. If not for Coit, Maryland barely competes with the tiny in-state mid-major from Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Coit is a 5-11 senior who is averaging just over 18 points per game and had just dropped 19 points at Marquette in an 89-82 win. Maryland's only loss came at home against local rival Georgetown (70-60) on Nov. 7. The Terps are 68th overall as ranked by KenPom, while they rank 82nd in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency rating and 56th in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency.
In the Marquette win, forward Pharrel Payne (6-9, 250) fell awkwardly on his hip after a dunk. He was averaging 18.2 points and 6.2 rebounds, but remarkably, is listed as questionable for this game. F Solomon Washington, a transfer from Texas A&M, has yet to play this season. Guard Myles Rice, who had 19 points against Georgetown and averaged 10.1 points per game with Indiana last season, is questionable after playing just one game with the Terrapins.
Key Injuries for Maryland
- F Pharrel Payne (hip) is questionable.
- F Solomon Washington (ankle) is questionable
- G Myles Rice (ankle) is questionable.
Zags are good for a change
Gonzaga is one of the most consistent programs in the nation. They've won 22 conference tournament championships and 26 straight NCAA Tournament appearances since 1999. They have that look at another one and Mark Few understands who to schedule in the non-conference to help them get there. They've already played Oklahoma (83-68 win), Arizona State (77-65 win) and Creighton (77-65 win), so they need to face high-majors since the West Coast Conference has mostly mid-majors. BYU might be gone, but Santa Clara (6-0) looks like the real deal, while Saint Mary's is always going to be a factor.
Graham Ike (6-9, 250) leads the Bulldogs with 17 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 58.5% from the field. Junior Bradey Huff (6-10, 250) adds 14.8 points and shoots 62% from the field. In terms of transfers, Adam Miller (11ppg) comes from Arizona State, while Tyon Grant-Foster (11.2ppg) comes from Grand Canyon.
On KenPom, Gonzaga is ranked third overall, eighth in Adjusted Offense and fifth in Adjusted Defense.
Spread Pick for Maryland vs. Gonzaga
Gonzaga vs. Maryland Pick and Prediction
- Maryland +13.5 (4 units)
One thing about Buzz Williams' teams is that they'll fight. No matter how many key players they have, his teams will defend well and if they have to play methodically, they'll try and win a rock fight. If it comes down to the free-throw line, Maryland shoots 81.6% (5th) from the charity stripe. Win or lose, they'll be facing UNLV and not Alabama, which is a fast-paced team. Gonzaga could be fatigued coming off that difficult game about 24 hours earlier.
Total Pick for Maryland vs. Gonzaga
- Under 154.5 (4 units)
Maryland is going to need to slow down to have any chance to win this game. Slower than their normal tempo of 194. Not sure which injured players will play if any. If you're Buzz Williams, you play it safe. Despite playing a pretty fast pace, the Zags have gone under in four of their last five games.
