Michigan vs Northwestern picks are always tricky when a ranked team is laying big points on the road this late in the season. Michigan is the No. 2 team in the country and is coming off a blowout, but Northwestern has shown it can scrap with quality opponents when it is counted out. I am breaking this one down the same way I do with my daily college basketball picks, focusing on matchup notes and the market movement we can actually see.

Quick Picks and Prediction

  • Spread Pick: Northwestern +15.5
  • Total Pick: Under 152.5
  • Projected Final Score: Michigan 80, Northwestern 69

Michigan vs Northwestern Key Matchups and Handicap

Michigan

Michigan is the No. 2 team in the country for a reason, and it just proved it again with a 21-point romp at Ohio State on Super Bowl Sunday. Dusty May’s side has looked like a machine lately, and it is tough to poke holes in a resume like that.

The only thing I can really say is that Michigan has been priced like a perfect team for stretches. The Wolverines dropped seven straight against the spread recently before recovering over the last three games. That tells me the market had them overvalued for a bit, which is common for highly-ranked teams wearing a big target.

Now they walk into Evanston laying a big number. That is where things get tricky in February.

NU

Northwestern has had a rocky road under Chris Collins this winter, and it is stuck fighting with Penn State, Maryland, and Oregon to stay out of the Big Ten basement. On paper, that is not the type of profile you want when facing a top-two team.

Still, I have to give Collins credit. Outside of last week’s blowout loss at Illinois, Northwestern has usually put up a scrap. We saw it again Sunday at Iowa City, when the Wildcats looked nothing like the team that was destroyed four nights earlier at Champaign-Urbana.

Northwestern has also shown this ability against quality opponents all season, including Virginia, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Illinois in the first meeting, and UCLA. That matters to me when I am handicapping a big underdog.

They also have one of the Big Ten’s best scoring threats in Nick Martinelli, who is averaging 22.1 points per game. When you have a scorer like that, you always have a chance to stay within range.

There is also some history here. Last season, another Big Dance-bound Michigan team needed overtime in Ann Arbor to finally subdue Northwestern. That does not guarantee anything, but it is another reminder that this matchup can get uncomfortable for the favorite.

At this stage of the season, I am not excited to lay double digits on the road, even with a team as strong as Michigan.

  • Michigan is coming off a 21-point win at Ohio State.
  • Michigan recently dropped seven straight games against the spread before recovering in the last three.
  • Northwestern is battling Penn State, Maryland, and Oregon to stay out of the Big Ten basement.
  • Northwestern put a scare into Iowa in Iowa City on Sunday.
  • Northwestern suffered a blowout loss at Illinois last week.
  • Nick Martinelli averages 22.1 points per game for Northwestern.
  • Last season, Michigan needed overtime in Ann Arbor to beat Northwestern.
  • The spread moved from Michigan -15.5 to Michigan -14.5 and back to -15.5.
  • Public betting updates show Northwestern at 100% for both money and tickets at multiple points.
  • The total is holding at 152.5, with public updates showing 100% on the over.

Key Injuries and Notes - MICH and NW

  • Michigan is ranked No. 2 in the country.
  • Michigan won by 21 at Ohio State on Super Bowl Sunday.
  • Northwestern has struggled this winter but has competed against several strong opponents.
  • Nick Martinelli is averaging 22.1 points per game.
  • Northwestern had a blowout loss at Illinois but bounced back with a stronger effort at Iowa.

ATS and Total Picks

  • ATS Pick: Northwestern +15.5
  • Total Pick: Under 152.5

Final Score Prediction

I still expect Michigan to win, because it is the better team and it has been rolling. But the number is large, and Northwestern has a long track record this season of playing above its level against good opponents.

With a scorer like Martinelli and a home floor in Evanston, I see the Wildcats making this one uncomfortable enough to cash a big underdog ticket.

  • Projected Final Score: Michigan 80, Northwestern 69

How to Bet

The best way I see to bet Michigan vs Northwestern is to take the points with the home underdog. Michigan is elite, but February road games with double-digit spreads are where favorites can get clipped, especially when the underdog has a proven ability to scrap.
