Blue Racers haven't been tested yet
Nick McDevitt is in his eighth year at Middle Tennessee State. He holds a 95-112 record with the Blue Racers and 193-178 for his career. MTSU went 22-12 last season and lost 109-103 in triple overtime in the opening round of the NIT to a Chattanooga team that would go on to win the whole tournament.
MTSU opened up the season with two tune-ups, beating Milligan 100-51 and Webster 109-56. The Blue Racers now head to Evansville for their first game against Division I competition. Things will get tougher soon with Michigan, Murray State, McNeese, and UAB coming up next.
Kamari Lands (15 ppg), Jahvin Carter (13 ppg), and Chris Loofe (12 ppg, 9 rpg) have led the team so far. Lands and Loofe are returners from last season, and Carter is a transfer from Penn State.
Alot of questions still for Evansville
Evansville went 11-21 last season and has not posted a winning record since 2017-18. This marks the fourth season under head coach David Ragland. The Purple Aces finished No. 254 in last year’s KenPom ratings, ranking 155th in defensive efficiency but just 318th on offense.
The team’s top three players from last season departed via the transfer portal, leaving a retooled roster led by 6’10 senior Connor Turnbull (9.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg). Also returning is 6’10 junior Joshua Hughes, who appeared in all 32 games last year and averaged 7.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Hughes has stepped up early, leading the team with 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds through the first three games.
New faces include Keishon Porter, who averaged 10.8 points per game at NC Central last season; 6’9 senior AJ Casey, who previously spent time at Miami (Florida) and Saint Louis; and 6’7 freshman Leif Moeller from Germany.
The Purple Aces are off to a 2-1 start, though their strength against Division I competition remains in question. They opened the year with an 82-51 loss at No. 1 Purdue before routing non-Division I opponents Calumet (92-50) and Oakland City (76-47). Evansville also recorded a 90-74 exhibition win over Henderson State, where Porter, Hughes, Moeller, and Casey each logged at least 34 minutes and played key roles.
Middle Tennessee State at Evansville Predictions
ATS Pick for MTU vs Evansville:
- MTSU +1.5 (4 Units)
Both teams’ wins this season have come against weaker non–Division I opponents, so there’s still plenty to prove on each side. However, Middle Tennessee State entered the year as the stronger program, and nothing I’ve seen so far changes that opinion. With a tough stretch ahead on the schedule, this is a game the Blue Raiders need to capitalize on. We’re getting the better team as a short underdog, and I’ll take MTSU to get it done.
Total Pick Middle Tennessee vs. Evansville:
- Over 141.5 (4 Units)
Last season, the total for this matchup closed at 146, and the teams combined for 143 points. With a slightly lower number posted this time, I see solid value on the Over. Both squads feature experienced lineups with several players who’ve spent time at larger programs. They’ve each shown balanced scoring early on, and I expect this game to find its way into the mid-140s. I’ll play the Over.
