Golden Gophers are a new-look team

Minnesota (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS, and 1-1 O/U) beat Gardner-Webb 88-60 and Alcorn State 95-50 in its first two games of the season. The Gophers shot 54 percent in game one, as they dominated in the paint (46 points) and on the boards (+14 rebounding margin). In game two, they jumped out to a 48-17 first-half lead and led by as many as 50. UM was once again dominant around the rim (48 points in the paint and 19 offensive rebounds).

The Golden Gophers were 15-17 last season, with a 7-13 record in Big Ten play. They finished in a five-way tie for 12th place in the conference's regular season standings and lost to Northwestern in the first round of the B1G tourney. After the season, the school announced they fired head coach Ben Johnson, who compiled a 56-71 record in four seasons leading the team. With one winning season (19-15 two seasons ago) and zero NCAA Tournament appearances, Minnesota moved on from Johnson and hired Niko Medved, who previously coached at Furman, Drake, and Colorado State. He spent the past seven seasons at CSU, compiling a 143-85 record with three NCAA tourney selections.

Minnesota was picked to finish 16th out of 18 teams in the media's Big Ten preseason poll. The 2025-26 squad features 13 newcomers and two returning players, guard Isaac Asuma and forward Grayson Grove. Assuma averaged 5.6 points in 24.7 minutes per game as a freshman last season, while Grove redshirted. Senior guard Cade Tyson is off to a hot start to his UM career, scoring 30 points vs Gardner-Webb and 21 vs Alcorn State. He didn't see the court much last season at North Carolina, but he averaged 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds with a 46.5% three-point mark two seasons ago at Belmont. A few other transfers expected to make an impact are junior forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson (9.0 PPG and 4.4 RPG at Colorado State last season), senior guard Langston Reynolds (16.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 3.4 APG at Northern Colorado), and senior forward Robert Vaihola (7.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, and 1.4 BPG at San José State).

Minnesota Golden Gophers Basketball Injury Report: Grove (undisclosed) and F BJ Omot (leg) are questionable to play against Mizzou.

Missouri has the potential to be a well-rounded squad

Missouri (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS, and 2-1 O/U) beat Howard by 21 and VMI by 38, but narrowly squeaked by Southeast Missouri State a couple of games ago. The Tigers trailed the Redhawks 51-46 at the half, needing a strong second-half showing to put away the Ohio Valley opponent. While Mizzou shot nearly 60 percent overall, it missed 12 free throws and was outrebounded. Still, it's been a hot start offensively for the Tigers, who are scoring 94.3 points per game and shooting 57.2 percent from the field, including 41.8 percent from long range.

Mizzou went 22-12 last season, finishing tied for sixth place in the SEC with a 10-8 regular season record in conference play. The Tigers lost to eventual national champion Florida in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament and were upset by 11-seed Drake in the first round of the NCAA tourney. The season ended earlier than fans hoped, but the team gave them plenty to cheer about, as their high-scoring offense (83.6 PPG on 48.2% FG shooting) led them to ten straight wins and an upset of number one Kansas.

Missouri is led by fourth-year head coach Dennis Gates, who has a 58-46 record with two March Madness trips under his belt. The 2025-26 squad returns three starters and was picked to finish seventh in the SEC's preseason poll. With seven returnees, five transfers, and two frosh, the Tigers have a nice mix. Senior guard Mark Mitchell (13.9 PPG and 4.7 RPG last season), sophomore forward Trent Pierce (6.7 PPG and 3.2 RPG), and junior guard Anthony Robinson II (SEC All-Defensive Team) are back to lead Missouri, as well as junior guard Sebastian Mack (UCLA transfer) and senior center Shawn Phillips Jr. (Arizona State transfer). Senior forward Jevon Porter, the younger brother of former Missouri stars Michael and Jontay, and senior guard Jayden Stone, who missed all of last season while at West Virginia, will also play significant minutes.

Missouri Tigers Basketball Injury Report: Pierce (lower body) and G Annor Boateng (lower body) are questionable to play against Minnesota.

Minnesota vs. Missouri Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Minnesota vs. Missouri

  • Missouri Tigers -6.5 (5 Units)

Minnesota has too many new pieces to fit together to beat Mizzou on the road. Medved's Colorado State teams excelled in his modern system by knocking down a lot of three-balls, but the Golden Gophers have shot just 32.4 percent this season. I'm concerned they lack depth and scoring options to keep pace with the Tigers, who will make a concerted effort to limit Tyson. The Gophers only have two other players averaging double-digit points, and their second-leading scorer, Crocker-Johnson, is shooting 29.2 percent from the field. Robinson and the lengthy Mitchell are excellent defenders, and the Tigers look stout overall on the perimeter. Missouri's interior defense is questionable, but Minnesota's frontcourt is undersized and thin on depth.

The home team should once again be super efficient offensively after ranking 26th in field goal percentage and 44th in three-point percentage. They also averaged 19.7 made free throws per game, second-most in the country. Missouri has six players scoring between 9.7 and 20.7 points per game this season, and three of those players are shooting over 45 percent from beyond the arc. Minnesota will struggle defensively both on the perimeter and at the rim in this matchup.

Over/Under Pick for Minnesota vs. Missouri

  • Over 157 (4 Units)

I expect a higher-tempo game on Wednesday.

Mizzou is averaging 76.6 possessions per game this season (113th) and ranked 112th in pace last season. The Tigers also rank 46th in offensive rebounds per game, which should give their efficient offense plenty of shots at the basket. I expect the home team to also turn those rebounds into trips to the free-throw line (29 FT attempts per game). Minnesota has its work cut out, but the Gophers aren't likely to be dominated on both ends of the court. They, too, have attempted a lot of free throws this season (33.5 per game) and are shooting over 60 percent from two-point range. While they haven't shot a high percentage from three, Medvev assembled a roster with plenty of shooters. If they can play to their potential, these teams will likely combine for more than 157 points.
