Both teams enter with 8-5 records, but their conference paths have started differently. Minnesota (8-5, 1-1 Big Ten) is looking to build on a three-game winning streak, while Northwestern (8-5, 0-2 Big Ten) is desperate to secure its first conference win of the season after a slow start in league play. Northwestern is a 5.5-point favorite, with the total set at 137.5. Get all of the best college basketball picks at Winners and Whiners.

Gophers defense facing the ultimate test

Minnesota has leaned heavily on its defensive identity this season, ranking as the 24th-best defense in the nation, allowing just 64.8 PPG. The Gophers' recent three-game sweep of non-conference opponents was highlighted by a stifling performance against Fairleigh Dickinson, where they held the Knights to just 26.9% shooting.

Offensively, the Gophers are led by senior transfer Cade Tyson, who has filled the scoring void left by Dawson Garcia (now in the G League). Tyson is the Big Ten's second-leading scorer, averaging 21.9 PPG on 53.5% shooting. He is supported by Jaylen Crocker-Johnson, who has stepped up his production to 13.8 PPG over the last ten games. However, Minnesota's depth is a concern; they are currently operating with a tight rotation due to earlier injuries to players like BJ Omot.

Martinelli carrying the Wildcats' high-octane attack

Northwestern features the most prolific scorer in the Big Ten: Nick Martinelli. The senior forward is averaging 22.8 PPG (4th in the NCAA) and is coming off a massive 32-point outing against Howard. Martinelli isn't just a volume scorer; he’s incredibly efficient, shooting 58.3% from the floor and 55.6% from three-point range.

The Wildcats' offense is significantly faster and more productive than in years past, averaging 80.5 PPG. They lead the Big Ten in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.03) and rank third in fastbreak points. Alongside Martinelli, junior forward Arrinten Page has been a force, averaging 13.4 PPG and providing a rim-protecting presence on the other end. For Northwestern to snap its conference skid, they must find a way to penetrate Minnesota’s disciplined half-court defense.

Spread pick for Minnesota vs. Northwestern

  • Northwestern -5.5 (-110)

Northwestern has dominated this series recently, winning three straight and five of the last six meetings. While Minnesota’s defense is elite, the Gophers have struggled on the road (0-2) and lack the depth to keep up with the Wildcats' transition game for a full 40 minutes. Nick Martinelli is a matchup nightmare for a Gopher frontcourt that has been thin on size this season. Expect the Wildcats to use their home-court advantage at Welsh-Ryan to secure a much-needed conference win and cover the spread.

Total pick for Minnesota vs. Northwestern

  • Under 137.5 (-105)

This is a battle of conflicting styles. Northwestern wants to run, but Minnesota is elite at forcing teams into long, grinding possessions. The Gophers have hit the Under in four of their last five games because they effectively limit fastbreak opportunities. With Big Ten play typically being more physical and defensive-minded, expect Minnesota to successfully slow the tempo, resulting in a game that lands in the mid-to-high 60s for both teams.
