Bulldogs are a tough, physical team
Mississippi State (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS, and 0-1 O/U) only led by a point at halftime, but rallied to outscore the Lions 48-25 in the second half. The Bulldogs dominated on the glass with a +17 margin, including 19 offensive rebounds. They scored 42 points in the paint and added 17 more in transition.

MSU went 21-13 last season, including 8-10 in Southeastern Conference competition. They lost in the second round of the SEC Tournament and were bounced by Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs are led by fourth-year head coach Chris Jans, who has compiled a 64-40 record with three appearances in the Big Dance. They were picked tenth in the SEC preseason poll.
Mississippi State has a deep, physical roster with a defensive mentality. Leading scorer and floor general Josh Hubbard had 27 points and eight rebounds in their season opener. The junior averaged 18.9 points per game last season and shot 34.5 percent from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs' returning group also features senior guard Shawn Jones Jr. (seven points and nine rebounds vs North Alabama) and sophomore guard Dellquan Warren (played in 26 games off the bench last season). Jans also did a fine job landing key transfers in senior guard Jayden Epps (Georgetown), 7-foot senior center Quincy Ballard (Wichita State), and senior guard JaβBorri McGhee (UAB). Epps and McGhee will be double-digit scorers, and Ballard offers rim protection and rebounding.
Mississippi State Bulldogs Basketball Injury Report: Center Gai Choi, who played in 4.3 mpg last season, is out for the year with a knee injury.
Iowa State is a Sweet 16-caliber team
Iowa State (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS, and 1-1 O/U) shot 52 percent against the Knights and 54 percent against the Tigers. They hit 12 threes in each contest with 90 combined points in the paint. The Cyclones led by 40-plus points in both games.
ISU was 25-10 last season, finishing 13-7 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones ranked as high as #2 in the nation, their highest ranking in program history, but were upset by Ole Miss in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2025-26 squad is led by fifth-year coach T. J. Otzelberger, who has compiled a 97-45 record with four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including two trips to the Sweet 16. The Cyclones were picked to finish fifth in the Big 12's preseason poll.
Leading scorers Curtis Jones and Keshon Gilbert are gone, but there's returning talent in Ames. Iowa State had three players named to the Naismith Starting Five Preseason Watch lists, as senior Tamin Lipsey (10.6 PPG and 3.1 APG) was named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Watch List, junior Milan Momcilovic (11.5 PPG) was named to the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Watch List, and senior Joshua Jefferson (13.0 PPG and 7.4 RPG) was named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Watch List. The trio is joined in the starting lineup by Virginia transfer Blake Buchanan and true freshman Killyan Toure. Purdue-Fort Wayne transfer Eric Mulder is another player to watch, as the senior forward led the nation in two-point field goal percentage (78.4%) last season.

Mississippi State vs. Iowa State Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Mississippi State vs. Iowa State
- Cyclones -5 (4 Units)
Mississippi State is at its best when it controls the pace and imposes its will on defense and on the glass. That's likely to be tough against an experienced, veteran-led Cyclones squad. I believe Jefferson will hold his own on the boards, preventing the slower-tempo Bulldogs from getting the extra possessions they need to thrive. I'm also confident the Cyclones' perimeter defenders will get up in Hubbard's face, holding him under his season scoring average. That's an x-factor, as he's MSU's engine. ISU should push the pace and take good care of the basketball, challenging the Bulldogs to keep up on the scoreboard. While stout defensively, they could struggle on the other end of the court against a Cyclones squad that held opponents to 68.3 points per game last season.
Mississippi State is 13-20 ATS in its last 33 games. This spread is too small to back the Bulldogs against a top-25 opponent β bet on Iowa State to cover!
Over/Under Pick for Mississippi State vs. Iowa State
- Under 152 (5 Units)
The Bulldogs want to slow down the pace, relying on their physical man-to-man defense to keep the Cyclones from pulling away. I don't doubt they'll affect the style of play, especially in the first half. Their length can be tough to overcome on that end of the court, as they clog the lane and disrupt passing lanes. I also feel confident that Iowa State's defense will cause problems for Mississippi State. Last season, ISU forced 15.2 turnovers per game and ranked in the top 15 in percentage of forced turnovers. They will limit the floor general Hubbard's offensive impact, preventing the Bulldogs from getting in a rhythm.
