New era at Murray State
Last season, Murray State went 16-17 (9-11 in OVC) and finished 138th in KenPom. The Racers are coming off consecutive back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since 1978 and 1979, and have parted ways with head coach Steve Prohm. Leading the Racers this season is Ryan Miller, who came over as an assistant with Creighton. Under Miller, Murray State is off to a 2-0 start, beating Omaha 85-77 and Mississippi Valley State 108-60.
Six Racers are averaging double-figures already in points, led by Javon Jackson (16 ppg), Fred King, Roman Domon (13 ppg), and Mason Miller (12 ppg, 7 rpg). Jackson is a transfer from UIC, King and Mason Miller both followed coach Ryan Miller from Creighton. Domon is a 6’9 freshman from France. Layne Taylor, a 5’11 sophomore guard who averaged 17.4 ppg with Central Arkansas last season, is averaging 10 ppg so far and should be a substantial contributor as well.

Enfield's group is loaded with talent
SMU is also unbeaten after knocking off Tarleton State 96-76 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 69-58. The team has gotten 12 ppg or better from five players so far, with Boopie Miller (17 ppg, 5.5 apg), Jason Pierre Jr (16.5 ppg), and Samet Yigtoglu (12 ppg, 9 rpg) leading the way. Miller and Yigotoglu are returning starters from last season, and Pierre Jr is a transfer guard who put up 21.6 ppg at Jacksonville State last season.
SMU is led by head coach Andy Enfield. Enfield got on the national radar when he led Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16 in 2013. He also led USC from 2013-2024, and is not entering his second season at SMU. Under Enfield, the Mustands went 24-11 last season (13-7 ACC) and lost to Oklahoma State 85-83 in the second round of the NIT. They finished a KenPom rating of No. 50.
Murray State vs SMU Predictions
Murray State vs SMU ATS Pick:
- Murray State +12.5 (4 units)
SMU should be a very good team this year, but I have to put respect on the name of the Murray State Racers. Murray State has a long and proud basketball tradition, and this roster has been loaded up and revamped by coach Ryan Miller whose resume includes being an assistant at some very prominent programs like Auburn, UNLV and TCU before Creighton.
As talented as SMU is, I don't expect them to get up for this game the same way Murray State will. The Mustangs may get the win, but I like the Racers to cover.
Murray State vs SMU Total Pick:
- Under 163.5 (4 units)
Even with all the offensive playmakers on both sides, this total feels too high. SMU only combined for 127 points with Texas A&M Corpus Christi in its last game. As for Murray State, they only went for 162 combined in its opener against Omaha, and the Mississippi Valley State game isn't something that should be weighed too heavily.
With the step up in class for both teams and expected effort, I see this game falling short of the mark.
