Wolfpack Look to Rebound From First Loss

NC State went into Monday unbeaten on the year while racking up plenty of points but they were held in check by Seton Hall in the opening round. The Wolfpack fell to 4-1 on the season and look to regroup from their first defeat of the year. Against Seton Hall, NC State scored the game’s opening bucket and took their last lead in the game at 4-3 just 80 seconds into the game. The Wolfpack gave up 13 of the next 15 points to trail 16-6 but clawed back within two at the half. That was as close as NC State would get as they gave up a 9-0 run to start the second half to trail by 11 and never made a push after that. The Wolfpack shot 42.4% from the field, including eight of 24 from three-point range, and lost the battle of the boards by a 37-30 margin. Ven-Allen Lubin led NC State with 16 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

The Wolfpack enters this game 3rd in the nation in scoring offense with 95.4 points per game this year. NC State is 62nd in rebounding with 39.2 boards a night and dish out 17.6 assists a night. Darrion Williams is one of six players on the Wolfpack averaging double figures with 21 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game this season. Paul McNeil Jr. (14 points, five boards) and Tre Holloman (13 points) average in double figures. Quadir Copeland (11.8 points, 4.8 assists), Matt Able (11.6 points, four rebounds, Ven-Allen Lubin (10.2 points, 6.2 rebounds), Jerry Deng, Musa Sagnia and Alyn Breed are other important pieces in the NC State rotation. The Wolfpack is shooting 51.6% from the field as a team on the year, which is seventh in Division I. Boise State Hoping to Learn From Missed Opportunity

Boise State battled to the end against USC but ended up falling short in their first round matchup Monday, dropping them into the consolation bracket. The Broncos dropped to 4-2 with the loss and look to get back in the win column here. Against USC, Boise State trailed 12-4 early and was down as many as nine in the opening half before rallying to slice the deficit to two at intermission. The Broncos never led by more than three and were tied in the final minute before giving up the go-ahead three-point play with 14 seconds to go. They had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds but Javan Buchanan’s three-pointer was off the mark. Boise State shot 41.3% from the field, including a rough five of 25 showing from beyond the arc, and turned the ball over 15 times to negate a 40-16 advantage in points in the paint. Buchanan led the Broncos with 18 points and six rebounds in the loss.

The Broncos are 210th in the nation in scoring offense as they average 75.8 points per game on the year. NC State vs. Boise State Spread Pick

  • NC State (4 units)

One has to give credit to Boise State as they held USC 30 points below their season average in their first round matchup. On the flip side, the Broncos crashed and burned from the perimeter, which proved to be their undoing as shooting 20% from beyond the arc isn’t a way to succeed. NC State was flat against Seton Hall, to the point that coach Will Wade said that the Pirates were “scrappier and tougher” than his team. One can bet that he will have his team up to the task in this one after that lackluster showing. NC State has no shortage of weapons on the offensive end and they are sound on the glass. Expect a better showing from the Wolfpack here as they get back in the win column here.

NC State vs. Boise State Over/Under Pick

  • Under (4 units)

NC State has gone over the number in four of five games on the year. The Wolfpack have been sound defensively, ranking 60th in defensive efficiency, 120th in effective field goal percentage defense (48.4%), 80th in forced turnover percentage (20.1%) and 86th in field goal percentage defense (42%) on the year. NC State is 97th in tempo with 71.6 possessions a night. Boise State has stayed under the number in four of their five games with a posted total. The Broncos are 26th in defensive efficiency, 128th in effective field goal percentage defense (48.7%), 29th in allowed offensive rebounding percentage (29.6%) and 130th in forced turnover percentage (18.7%) this season. Boise State is 259th in adjusted tempo with 68.7 possessions a night. The Broncos will try taking some air out of the ball and slow things down here. Lean toward the under in this contest as a result.
