Tar Heels are seeking a bounce-back victory
North Carolina (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS, and 2-5 O/U) lost 74-58 to Michigan State on Thanksgiving, failing to cover as one-point spread underdogs. The Tar Heels shot under 40 percent from the field, as they were held to 4-for-23 shooting (17%) from three-point range. MSU won the rebounding battle (+7 margin) and scored 46 points in the paint.
UNC averages 83.4 points (168th) on 46.8 percent shooting (132nd), including 31.8 percent from beyond the arc (250th). Defensively, the Heels allow 65.7 points per game (31st) on 36.5 percent shooting (14th), including 32.9 percent from three-point distance (199th). North Carolina ranks 31st in NET rating, including 45th in offensive efficiency and 33rd in defensive efficiency, per KenPom.
Freshman forward Caleb Wilson leads UNC in scoring, averaging 19.9 points on 58.7 percent shooting. He also contributes 9.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. A few other Tar Heels to watch against Kentucky are 7-foot junior center Henri Veesaar (15.9 PPG and 8.3 RPG), freshman guard Luka Bogavac (12.0 PPG and 3.4 APG), and junior forward Jarin Stevenson (7.9 PPG and 4.4 RPG).
North Carolina Tar Heels Injury Report:
- Senior guard Seth Trimble (14.5 PPG in two games) is out indefinitely with a broken forearm.
Kentucky is seeking its first statement win
Kentucky (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS, and 4-3 O/U) defeated Tennessee Tech 104-54 in its previous game, covering as 37-point spread favorites. The Wildcats dominated on both ends of the court, shooting 59 percent and holding the Golden Eagles to 33 percent. They also won the rebounding battle 48-27 and scored 48 in the paint.
UK averages 105.0 points (5th) on 50.5 percent shooting (34th), including 35.3 percent from three (121st). Defensively, the Wildcats surrender 73.7 points per game (126th) on 35.8 percent shooting (5th), including 27.6 percent from deep (32nd). Kentucky ranks 11th in NET rating, including 17th in offensive efficiency and 12th in defensive efficiency, per KenPom.
Senior guard Denzel Aberdeen paces Kentucky in scoring at 14.0 points per game on 53.0 percent shooting. A few other Wildcats to watch against North Carolina are senior guard Otega Oweh (13.0 PPG and 3.7 RPG), sophomore guard Collin Chandler (11.7 PPG and 3.6 RPG), and 7-foot freshman center Malachi Moreno (10.6 PPG and 7.6 RPG).
Kentucky Wildcats Injury Report:
- G Jaland Lowe (7.5 PPG and 5.0 APG in two games) has been out since Nov. 11 (shoulder).
North Carolina vs. Kentucky Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for North Carolina vs. Kentucky
- Tar Heels +7.5 (5 Units)
I have questions about both teams in this matchup, but I lean towards UNC's side against the spread. While their depth is concerning with Trimble out, North Carolina played Michigan State much tougher than Kentucky. The Heels were competitive for most of that game, despite shooting 17 percent from three, before the Spartans' physicality wore them down. In the Wildcats' loss to MSU, they were thoroughly routed, showing little toughness. The Wildcats' depth is also questionable, as significant injuries to three contributors (Lowe, Mouhamed Dioubate, and Jayden Quaintance) have shortened their rotation. None of those players may suit up on Tuesday, and their minutes will be restricted if they can.
North Carolina has the signature win of these two teams: a 13-point victory over Kansas, which had freshman star Darryn Peterson for that game. UK, meanwhile, has lost its first two non-conference tests against Louisville and MSU. Home-court advantage will work in Kentucky's favor, but it won't be enough to help them cover the spread.
Over/Under Pick for North Carolina vs. Kentucky
- Under 159.5 (4 Units)
I'm not sold that either team is entering this matchup playing its best basketball, and with injuries affecting both rotations, I like the under at 159.5 total points.
Kentucky ranks 12th in defensive efficiency, as it rarely fouls (4th in opponent FT attempt rate) and is tough to score against from three-point range and around the rim (14th in opponent near-proximity percentage). The Wildcats do a fine job of preventing second-chance scoring opportunities off offensive rebounds, too. North Carolina is also stout defensively, especially around the rim. The Heels rank 2nd in the nation in two-point defense and, like Kentucky, rarely put their opponents on the foul line.
