Arizona aims for its third straight W
The Arizona Wildcats outlasted the reigning NCAA champions, the Florida Gators, on opening night. At the neutral site at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the Wildcats beat the Gators 93-87, and freshman forward Koa Peat led the charge with 30 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Arizona gave up 17 offensive boards but held the Gators to 42.9% shooting from the field.
Last Friday, the Wildcats beat Utah Tech 93-67 at home, failing to cover a massive 33.5-point spread. Arizona shot 57.1% from the field (7-for-15 from deep) while posting a 24/12 assist-to-turnover ratio. Three Wildcats accounted for 18 points, including Koa Peat, while senior forward Tobe Awaka posted a double-double of 12 points and 18 rebounds.
Arizona returns 37.6% of minutes played and 35.3% of scoring from its 2024-25 roster. The Wildcats went 24-13 overall and 14-6 in conference play last season, as they made an impressive debut in the Big 12. Northern Arizona vs. Arizona Pick
Spread Pick for Northern Arizona vs. Arizona
- Arizona (4 units)
This Arizona team is deep. Tobe Awaka started 36 games for the Wildcats last season, tallying 8.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, and he’s now coming off the bench. Koa Peat was the No. 8 in the RSCI Top 100, while fellow freshman Brayden Burries was No. 9.
The Lumberjacks will struggle to cope with the Wildcats’ length and physicality. Northern Arizona is not a great defensive team, and the Wildcats will push the ball in transition and attack the rim all night. Hereof, I’m backing the Wildcats to beat the number.
Over/Under Pick for Northern Arizona vs. Arizona
- Over (4 units)
Under Tommy Lloyd, the Wildcats prefer to play fast. Last season, they were 51st in the country in pace (70.3 possessions per 40 minutes). The Wildcats don’t rely on 3-pointers a lot, but they are lethal inside the arc.
On the other side, the Lumberjacks were 215th in the country in pace last season, recording 66.8 possessions per 40 minutes. However, their defense was bad, allowing 111.6 points per 100 possessions (274th).
The Lumberjacks take good care of the ball. They should be able to score enough to push the total over the line. The over is 6-2 in the Lumberjacks’ last eight games overall and 14-6 in their previous 20 showings on the road.
