ODU Struggling on the Road

The Old Dominion Monarchs are having a tough time on the road this season, having lost all seven of their games away from home so far. The Monarchs come into this game after playing four consecutive road games, and need a momentum shift soon to fix their 3-7 record. The team is in their second year under Head Coach Mike K. Jones, and despite the slow start, they still believe they can battle for a Sun Belt Championship this season. In their last game, the Monarchs got 17 points, including five threes from Robert Davis Jr. in the loss to Richmond.

Davis is a 6'6 junior guard who buried 109 three-pointers last season, and already has another 21 this season. His scoring has gone down a bit; he averaged 15.6 PPG as a sophomore, and is only getting 9.9 PPG through his first nine games here, but is coming off the hot shooting game against Richmond. Their top scorer has been KC Shaw, he is a 6'4 senior guard who transferred in from Maryland Eastern Shore and is averaging 14.7 PPG with his new team. Shaw missed a few games with an injury, but returned to score 17 against Richmond and is likely to play here. LJ Thomas is another scorer, the 6'2 senior guard played a big role at Appalachian State last season, and is getting 13.3 PPG and 3.5 APG this year.

Old Dominion is currently ranked 217th overall out of 365 Division I teams according to KenPom. They are 181st in offensive efficiency and 260th in defensive efficiency. They play at an average pace, ranking 183rd in tempo.

Patriots Suffer First Loss

The George Mason Patriots started off the season with nine straight wins, but finally fell when they took on Virginia Tech out of the ACC on the road. Their best wins so far came against Florida Atlantic and Ohio, but it should be noted that GMU was listed as the favorite in all of their first nine games. George Mason went 27-9 last season in Head Coach Tony Skinn's second season at the helm, putting him on the watch list for bigger jobs. In their last game, Kory Mincy had 16 points in the loss to V-Tech.

Mincy is off to a hot start this season in his first year with the team after transferring in from Presbyterian. He is averaging 18.9 PPG, 4.0 APG, and has knocked down 30 three pointers as a 6'2 junior guard. Mincy's biggest game of the season came when he dropped 29 in a win over Winthrop. Jahari Long is a 6'5 scorer on the wing. He transferred in from Maryland to play a bigger role and is scoring 12.4 PPG in his final season. Masai Troutman adds to the scoring as a 6'5 guard, contributing 11.3 PPG.

GMU is ranked 69th overall according to KenPom. They are 81st in offensive efficiency and 58th in defensive efficiency. They play much slower than Old Dominion, ranking 321st in pace of play.

ODU vs. George Mason Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for ODU vs. GMU

  • ODU +16.5 (5 units)

Take the points with the underdog in this one in this matchup of old CAA rivals, as the records amongst these two teams are misleading, putting value back on the underdogs. Old Dominion has been battling it out on the road, playing seven of their 10 games away from home, but they have covered in three of their last five games. Meanwhile, George Mason opened the season with nine straight wins, but they were favored to win in all nine games as they were expected to win. ODU is projected to compete in the Sun Belt, and have three solid scorers in Davis, Shaw and Thomas; they will be able to keep this one close.

Take Old Dominion with the points.

Over/Under Pick for Old Dominion vs. George Mason

  • Under (4 units)

George Mason is at home, plays at a slow pace, and their defense is the best-ranked unit in this game. That defense is ranked 58th nationally according to KenPom, and they will be going up against an Old Dominion offense that is ranked only 181st overall. On top of this, the Patriots rank 321st in pace of play; they like to play slow and will go deep into the shot clock as they use their half court sets. The top six scorers in this game are all guards, which means there will not be many easy baskets in the post or offensive boards for either team. Expect a low-scoring game here.

Take the under.
