Oklahoma is Loaded with Transfers

The transfer portal has become a necessary evil for college hoops these days, and the Oklahoma Sooners did not hesitate to take advantage this offseason. They brought in three players who were scoring in double figures at other programs, which is needed after they lost their star freshman guard to the NBA. Jeremiah Fears started his pro career early, as he is now with the Pelicans, and Oklahoma has rebuilt its program without him. They lost an early-season matchup against Gonzaga, but the season is still young, and they have another chance here.

Their top scorer so far has been 6'2 junior guard Xzayvier Brown, the Sooners were ably to pry him away from his hometown of Philadelphia, as he was a big time scorer last year for St. Joseph's. Brown has scored at least 16 points in each of his three games with Oklahoma for an average of 18.7 PPG to go with his team high 3.3 APG. Tae Davis came over from Notre Dame to patrol the paint. The strong 6'9 senior is getting 11.7 PPG and 10.3 RPG so far. Nijel Pack is an outside shooter who made a Final Four with Miami two seasons ago. He is back to his high-scoring ways, getting 16.3 PPG as a 5'10 senior guard.

Oklahoma is ranked 60th overall according to KenPom, out of 365 Division I teams. They are 48th in offensive efficiency and 84th in defensive efficiency. The Sooners play at an average pace, ranking 190th in the nation in pace of play.

Cornhuskers Face First Test

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are undefeated, but have not faced much of a challenge as they took down West Georgia, FIU and Maryland Eastern Shore. This is not a home game for Nebraska, but the gym in South Dakota they are playing in is not a far stretch from Lincoln. The Cornhuskers lost most of their top talent from last year, but believe they have enough to compete for a tournament spot this season. In their last game, they were led by Pryce Sandfort with 21 points in the win over UMES.

Sandfort made the rare transfer inside the Big Ten Conference, as he came over from Iowa, where he scored 8.8 PPG last season. He is now a 6'7 junior with a career 38.9% success rate from beyond the arc. So far this year, Sandfort is getting 14.0 PPG and 4.0 RPG. Nebraska is welcoming back Rienk Mast, an injury kept him out of the lineup last season, but the 6'10, 250-pound big man is back for another year with the Cornhuskers after scoring 12.3 PPG two seasons ago. Mast is getting 11.3 PPG this year. Braden Frager has been a high-scoring freshman; he is a 6'7 wing getting 13.3 PPG over his first three seasons.

Nebraska is ranked 46th overall according to KenPom. They are 54th in offensive efficiency and 46th in defensive efficiency. The Cornhuskers play slightly faster than Oklahoma, ranking 139th in pace of play.

Oklahoma vs. Nebraska Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for Oklahoma vs. Nebraska

  • Oklahoma +1.5 (5 units)

This game may be closer to Nebraska, but it is not a home game, and the Sooners have way too much talent to be listed as the underdog here. They are getting a point and a half on the spread, but the moneyline could also be a strong play as the best athletes on the floor will be wearing Oklahoma jerseys. The Cornhuskers are not an athletic team, Sandfort is a standstill shooter, and Mast is a slow-paced big. They will not be able to keep pace with this Oklahoma team featuring Brown and Pack on the perimeter, and Davis can move on the inside as well. The Sooners lost to Gonzaga, but that is not a bad loss, while Nebraska has not played anyone yet.

Take Oklahoma with the points.

Over/Under Pick for Oklahoma vs. Nebraska

  • Over 161.5 (4 units)

This total has the teams just reaching the 80s, which is likely here as each team will be motivated to put on a show against a quality opponent. Oklahoma struggled against Gonzaga, but the Zags have a much stronger defense than Nebraska, and the Sooners have now had more time to make their offense gel. The Sooners will want to play faster than usual, as they have more speed on the perimeter than Nebraska, and will benefit from pushing the pace. Nebraska has only played mid-majors so far, which will cause their offense and defense to speed up against the tougher competition. Expect a high scoring game here.

Take the over.
