Oklahoma is in a TailspinΒ

The SEC basketball has improved steadily over the past few seasons, and the Oklahoma Sooners are finding that out the hard way this season. They opened up conference play with a win over Ole Miss, but have subsequently lost their next five games coming into this contest with Missouri. Only two of those five losses came against ranked opponents, falling to both #19 Florida and #18 Alabama on their home floor. Oklahoma is currently tied with LSU at the bottom of the league standings with their 1-5 records.

Oklahoma is coming off their road loss in South Carolina, in that game they were led by Xzayvier Brown with 22 points and six rebounds. He is a 6'2 junior guard who just transferred in from St. Joe's where he was scoring 17.6 PPG last season. Brown is still putting up strong numbers this year, as he leads the team in scoring and assists with 16.3 PPG and 3.2 APG. Their top outside shooter is Nijel Pack, he has made 57 threes so far on 41.0% shooting from deep while averaging 15.2 PPG. Pack is a 5'10 senior who bounced around college hoops, playing for Kansas State and Miami before joining the Sooners. Their top frontcourt player is Tae Davis, the 6'9 senior contributing 13.2 PPG and 6.5 RPG.

The Sooners are ranked 62nd overall out of 365 Division I teams according to KenPom. They are 48th in offensive efficiency and 120th in defensive efficiency. They play at a relatively slow pace, ranking 202nd in the nation in tempo. Oklahoma needs to get hot and start winning games to be considered for an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Tigers are on the Bubble

It is never too early to start talking about the NCAA Tournament, and the Missouri Tigers are currently in search for quality wins as they would be on the bubble if the season were to end today. Joe Lunardi currently has Missouri listed on his "Next 4 Out" section of Bracketology, which would leave them narrowly missing the Big Dance. The Tigers are in the middle of the SEC with a 3-3 league record, but have lost three of their last four as they head home to take on the struggling Sooners on Saturday.

Their last game was the tight loss against Georgia, they missed the opportunity to defeat a ranked opponent despite getting 18 point from Mark Mitchell in the loss. Mitchell began his career at Duke as a power forward, but has been working to improve his perimeter skills in his two seasons in Missouri. He is a a 6'9 senior getting 17.3 PPG and 5.3 RPG, leading Missouri in both categories. Jayden Stone is their next top scorer, he is a 6'4 senior averaging 15.0 PPG and 5.2 RPG. Stone played at smaller schools throughout his college career at Grand Canyon and Detroit, but transferred to Missouri to play his final season in the SEC. Their top shooter is 6'8 senior Jacob Crews, he has 45 made threes and is adding another 11.6 PPG.

Missouri is ranked 55th overall according to KenPom. They are 52nd in offensive efficiency and 88th in defensive efficiency. The Tigers play even slower than the Sooners, as Missouri ranks 249th in pace of play.

Oklahoma vs. Missouri Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for Oklahoma vs. Missouri

  • Missouri to cover (5 units)

Oklahoma has tried to build their roster through the transfer portal, but it has not worked, as their new pieces are not gelling and the team is losing SEC games on a regular basis. Brown and Pack are talented backcourt players, but the duo has not been able to get on the same page for Oklahoma, and neither of the two are high level defenders. The worst unit in the game analytically is Oklahoma's defense, ranking only 120th in efficiency, as they will be trying to go up against Missouri's 52nd ranked offense. The Tigers are big, their top players like have size and like to play in the paint, which will be a problem for the guard heavy Sooners. Mitchell will have a strong game at home as their veteran leader, and the Tigers will get a cover here.

Take Missouri to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Oklahoma vs. Missouri

  • Over (4 units)

The analytics point to an over here, as each team has a stronger offense as opposed to their defense, meaning each team will have the advantage when they have the ball. Oklahoma's defense is the worst analytical unit in this game, but their offense is the best, as they rank 48th in the nation in efficiency. Oklahoma is guard heavy, and Missouri is stronger inside, further highlighting that each team will find success on offense as they focus on attacking with their strengths. Expect a high scoring game here.

Take the over.
