Old Dominion Struggles on the Road
The Old Dominion Monarchs have played eight true road games this season, and have lost all eight of those games. They covered in three of those losses, with those all coming recently as the oddsmakers have been giving the Monarchs more points on the road after their early defeats. Old Dominion is currently getting 13.5-points for this trip to College Park to take on the Terrapins. In their most recent outing, they lost a tight battle with Coastal Carolina despite getting 23 points from Jordan Battle at home.
Battle knocked down four of his five attempts from three in that game, and is their top outside shooter on the season having knocked down 25 threes on 43.1% shooting from deep. Battle is a 6'2 senior guard who was playing his former team, as he transferred in from Coastal Carolina over the offseason. Battle gets 14.2 PPG and 5.5 RPG. Their top scorer is KC Shaw, he is a 6'4 senior guard averaging 16.0 PPG. Shaw gets most of his points while attacking the basket, despite being a guard he has not made a single three pointer on the season coming into this one. The Monarchs are guard-heavy, their top four scorers are all perimeter players. Their top frontcourt player is 7'0 senior Caelum Swanton-Rodger who adds 7.4 PPG and 5.2 RPG.
Old Dominion 217th overall out of 365 Division I teams according to KenPom. They are 212th in offensive efficiency and 233rd in defensive efficiency. The Monarchs play at an average pace, ranking 152nd in the nation in pace of play.
Terrapins Drop Five of Six
The Maryland Terrapins are searching for some positive momentum in their final non-conference game before Big Ten play starts back up. Maryland hit a tough patch in their schedule, as they have lost five of their last six coming into this matchup with Old Dominion. The road was not easy, as four of those five losses came against ranked opponents including #12 Gonzaga, #8 Alabama, #2 Michigan and #23 Virginia. In their last game, Maryland got 15 points and six assists from David Coit in the loss to Virginia.
Coit is a 5'11 senior guard who has traveled all over during his college basketball career. He started off at Northern Illinois where he was a big time scorer, he averaged 20.8 PPG with them during his Sophomore year. He then transferred to Kansas, where he got playing time, but his role decreased as he only averaged 5.1 PPG for the powerful Jayhawks. He chose to play his final season with Maryland, and is now getting 14.8 PPG and is their top outside shooter with 36 made threes on a red hot 46.2% outside shooting clip. Their top scorer is Pharrel Payne, the athletic 6'9 forward came over from Texas A&M and now leads the Terrapins with 17.5 PPG and 7.2 RPG, but he may miss this game with a leg injury. Darius Adams is their third scorer, he is a 6'5 freshman getting 12.3 PPG.
Maryland is currently ranked 101st overall according to KenPom. They are 113th in offensive efficiency and 98th in defensive efficiency. They play just slightly slower than the Monarchs, ranking 173rd in pace of play.

Spread pick for Old Dominion vs. Maryland
- Old Dominion +13.5 (5 units)
Maryland head coach Buzz Williams has always been cagey when it comes to injuries on his roster, and not much has changed this year. It is unclear if Pharrel Payne will play here, as the big man is bothered by a lower leg injury. After this game, Maryland will take on Oregon, Indiana and UCLA in consecutive games. Given the difficulty of that stretch, it would not make sense to put Payne on the floor if he is at risk of reinjuring his leg. Without Payne in the game, this turns into a perimeter battle, as all the top remaining scorers are all guards. Shaw and Battle can score enough for the Monarchs to keep this one close, and are getting even more points here due to the uncertainty of the Payne injury. Take the points.
Take Old Dominion with the points.
Over/Under Pick for Old Dominion vs. Maryland
- Over 152 (4 units)
The biggest news around this game is that 6'9, 250 pound star forward Pharrel Payne might not play. This will change the entire flow of the game on both sides. Maryland will no longer slow the game down while trying to work it to Payne on the inside, and Old Dominion will no longer have any fear about driving to the paint, as the athletic big man is not down there protecting the rim. Maryland has gone over in five of their last six games, with their only under coming against a Virginia team which has a much better defense than Old Dominion. Expect a lot of points here.
Take the over.
