Ole Miss has struggled against the spread
The Ole Miss Rebels (5-0; 1-4 ATS; 4-1 O/U) have won their first five games of the season, but they’ve covered the spread just once. On the opening night, the Rebels beat SE Louisiana 88-58 as 22-point home favorites. Since then, Ole Miss has gone 0-4 ATS at home, outlasting UL Monroe 86-65, Memphis 83-77, Cal State Bakersfield 82-60, and Austin Peay 72-65.
The Rebels take the floor for the first time since last Tuesday, when they beat Austin Peay. Ole Miss held the Governors to 35.7% shooting from the field (9-33 from deep) while making 41.0% of its field goals (7-for-24 from deep). Senior forward Malik Dia notched 18 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Ilias Kamardine had 15 points, seven boards, and seven assists.
Kamardine averages 15.8 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.4 boards, and Dia adds 14.4 points and 5.4 boards per game. The Rebels score 116.7 points per 100 possessions (44th in the country) and allow 101.2 points in return (59th). They are 55th in the country in 3-point percentage (37.8%).
Iowa aims for its fourth straight ATS win
The Iowa Hawkeyes (5-0; 4-1 ATS; 4-1 O/U) are undefeated, too, but they’ve been a covering machine thus far. Iowa failed to beat the number in a 77-58 home victory over Western Illinois on November 7. Since then, the Hawkeyes have covered the spread in three straight home wins against Xavier 81-62, Southeast Missouri State 99-70, and Chicago State 93-54.
Last Thursday, the Hawkeyes trounced Chicago State as 32.5-point favorites. Iowa allowed just two 3-pointers while going 12-for-31 from beyond the arc. The Hawkeyes outscored the Cougars 42-24 in the paint, and senior guard Tavion Banks led the charge with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Fellow senior guard Bennett Stirtz tallies 17.6 points and 6.2 assists per game this season. He was a star at Drake last season. Banks posts 11.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while junior forward Alvaro Folgueiras averages 12.4 points and 5.8 boards. The Hawkeyes score 121.5 points per 100 possessions (9th in the country) and allow 101.1 points in return (56th).
Ole Miss vs. Iowa Pick
Spread Pick for Ole Miss vs. Iowa
- Ole Miss Rebels (4 units)
This is the first proper test for the Hawkeyes, whose offense has been sensational this season. In their first year under Ben McCollum, the Hawkeyes lead the country in 2-point percentage (70.0%) and rank 26th in 3-point percentage (40.0%). The Hawkeyes love to attack the rim. They are third in the country in free-throw rate (.584), and Iowa makes 77.2% of its shots from the foul line (45th).
On the other side, the Rebels had a tough game against Memphis. Ole Miss prevailed despite missing 12 of its 33 free throws. The Rebels execute their offense at a high level, too, and I think they stand a chance of beating the Hawkeyes. Ole Miss also loves to attack the rim, and Iowa’s interior defense is not elite.
We should see a tight battle for all 40 minutes. Both teams take good care of the ball and match up against each other very well. Frankly, this game could easily go either way.
Over/Under Pick for Ole Miss vs. Iowa
- Over (4 units)
Both teams play at a slow pace. Iowa registers just 65.7 possessions per 40 minutes (354th in the country), while Ole Miss records 68.1 possessions per 40 minutes (280th). However, their offensive execution has been nothing short of spectacular this season, so I’m backing the over.
I expect to see a ton of free throws in this game. Both teams will attack the rim a lot. Iowa will look to get to the free-throw line whenever possible, though the Rebels are arguably a much better team than the Hawkeyes when it comes to rim protection. Moreover, both teams have been lethal from downtown thus far.
