Running and putting up points
Providence enters its third season under head coach Kim English and is aiming to rebound from a difficult 12-20 campaign that included a 6-14 Big East record. The Friars struggled late last year, dropping 10 of their final 11 games, but this season’s early results have shown improvement and depth.
Providence opened with an 89-79 win over Holy Cross, followed by a 107-101 overtime loss to Virginia Tech. On Tuesday, the Friars responded with a convincing 106-81 win over Penn. Their guard-heavy lineup has been the driving force through three games. Jason Edwards leads the team with 17.7 points per game, while Jaylin Sellers and Stefan Vaaks each contribute 16.7 points. Ryan Mela adds 11 points and 8 rebounds per game, and Oswin Erhumwunse leads the team on the boards with 9 rebounds while adding 7.7 points.
Providence sits at No. 69 in KenPom’s overall rankings. They are 46th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 99th on defense. Their pace, spacing, and experience in the backcourt make them one of the more dynamic early-season offensive teams.
Colorado is looking for a bounce-back season
Tad Boyle continues to guide the program in his 15th season. He owns a 314-203 record at Colorado and is working to bounce back from last year’s 14-21 finish that included a 3-17 mark in the Big 12.
Colorado is playing its third straight home game after opening the season with an 84-78 win over Montana State and a 102-97 victory against Eastern Washington. The Buffaloes are ranked No. 101 by KenPom, with the 77th-rated offense and the 135th-rated defense, suggesting they may need to outscore opponents to win early in the year.
Isaiah Johnson has led the way offensively with 20.5 points per game. Sebastian Rancik is right behind him at 18.5 points, while Barrington Hargress adds 12.5. The Buffaloes have shown the ability to play in high-possession games but have struggled to get consistent stops.
Colorado’s offensive talent is clear, but its defensive gaps remain a concern heading into its first major test of the season.
Providence Friars vs Colorado Buffaloes Predictions
ATS Pick for Providence vs. Colorado:
- Providence +1.5 (5 units)
I think Colorado’s home court edge has swung this line more than it should have. The trip to Boulder is long, but the Friars have not played since Tuesday, and it is still early in the season. I like the Friars' edge on both ends of the floor as they appear to be the deeper and more balanced team, with a substantial advantage on defense.
Even on the road, the Friars’ pace, guard play, and efficiency give them a real edge over the Buffs. Colorado has been inconsistent defensively against two mid-majors to start the season, and Providence is built to speed up the tempo and wear them down. I will take the points with the more complete team, and that is Providence.
Total Pick for Providence vs Colorado
- Over 162.5 ( 5 units)
Both teams have been far more effective on offense than defense, and their early-season numbers point toward another fast, high-possession matchup. Providence ranks 57th in adjusted tempo and is averaging 98.7 points while allowing 89. Colorado is scoring 93 points and giving up 87.5. Neither team has shown the ability to string together stops, but both are comfortable running. With two aggressive offenses, efficient guards, defensive issues early, and pace, this total is high for a reason, and the over is the best play.
