Providence vs. Virginia Tech Matchup

Providence looks like a well-rounded team

Providence (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS, and 1-0 O/U) took a 20-point lead against the Crusaders and never looked back, coasting to a victory in game one. The Friars shot 50 percent overall, scoring 44 points in the paint, but were inefficient from beyond the arc (7-for-26). They also won the rebounding battle and added 15 points in transition. The Friars also played exhibition games against Pittsburgh (81-74 loss) and Harvard (85-77 win).

Providence was 12-20 last season, including 6-14 in Big East competition. It was a disappointing result, as the Friars went 21-14 the previous season under first-year head coach Kim English. Injuries were a major reason for the underwhelming performance, as Friar players missed a combined 61 games. The 2025-26 squad features five returnees and ten newcomers, and was picked to finish 11th in the Big East's preseason poll.

Senior guard Corey Floyd Jr. is Providence's leading returning scorer at 9.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He will step into the point guard role this season, leading fellow returnees Oswin Erhunmwunse, a 6-10 sophomore forward who led the team in rebounds (5.6 per game), and sophomore guard Ryan Mela (6.4 PPG and 5.2 RPG). A Big East All-Freshman team selection, Erhunmwunse blocked 52 shots last season and will be in the mix for conference DPOY. A few other Friars to watch are freshman forward Jamier Jones (top-50 recruit), freshman guard Stefan Vaaks (6-foot-7 shooter from Estonia), senior guard Jaylin Sellers (averaged 15.9 PPG at UCF two years ago), and senior guard Jason Edwards (averaged 17.0 PPG at Vanderbilt last season).

Virginia Tech retooled its roster for 2025-26

Virginia Tech (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, and 1-0 O/U) got off to a slow start against the Buccaneers, but turned it on in the second half to pick up win number one of the season. The visitors gave the Hokies all they could handle in the first half, as VT led by only four points, but the home team dominated after halftime (56-29). Virginia Tech had a significant rebounding edge (+13 margin with 18 offensive rebounds) and forced 15 turnovers.

The Hokies compiled a 13-19 record in 2024-25, winning 8 of their 20 Atlantic Coast Conference games. They were 19-15 the previous season, receiving an at-large bid to the NIT. Virginia Tech is in its seventh season under head coach Mike Young, who has led the program to a 106-85 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances. The 2025-26 team features four returning players, three transfers, and six freshmen. VT was selected to finish 12th in the ACC Preseason Poll.

Senior forward Tobi Lawal is the headliner of the returnees, after averaging 12.4 points and 7.0 rebounds last season. Junior guard Jaden Schutt, who started his career at Duke, is a three-point threat, and Tyler Johnson (6.7 PPG with 28 starts) and Ben Hammond (5.6 PPG with 17 starts) played significant minutes last season as freshmen. Three newcomers to watch are junior forward Amani Hansberry (9.8 PPG and 6.5 RPG at West Virginia), senior guard Jailen Bedford (10.2 PPG and 4.3 RPG at UNLV), and freshman guard Neoklis Avdalas (five-star recruit from Greece).

Providence vs. Virginia Tech Pick and Preview

Moneyline Pick for Providence vs. Virginia Tech

  • Virginia Tech ML (5 Units)

While I'm intrigued by Providence, its lack of size will be challenging to overcome against Virginia Tech. The Hokies' roster is the biggest it's been in recent seasons, giving them a significant advantage on the glass. The Friars' frontcourt is thin size-wise, and Edwards and Daquan Davis are diminutive guards. Their guards were also small last season, which allowed their opponents to dominate on pick-and-rolls, even with Erhunmwunse defending the basket. If he gets in foul trouble, the Friars will be in a world of trouble. The Hokies lack three-point shooting depth, but that shouldn't be a concern against the Friars. They'll relentlessly attack them in the paint for easy buckets, second-chance rebounds, and trips to the foul line.

Bet on the Hokies' side in Saturday's Big East-ACC clash in Connecticut.

Over/Under Pick for Providence vs. Virginia Tech

  • Over 155 (4 Units)

Providence ranked 134th in defensive efficiency rating last season, including 337th in steal percentage. That was a far cry from the previous season, when the Friars were 18th in defensive efficiency. Without Josh Oduro in the middle and Devin Carter on the perimeter, they haven't been intimidating defensively. Given the Friars' lack of size, I don't anticipate a stout defensive performance on Saturday against the Hokies, who will score in bunches in the paint.

This matchup projects to be high-tempo, too. The Hokies played at the 32nd-fastest pace nationally in their season opener, while the Friars were 48th. Even if Virginia Tech dominates on the glass for second-chance opportunities, it's unlikely to slow down the game.
