The college hoops betting action continues Friday, January 30, 2026, with the Rice Owls taking on the Charlotte 49ers in the American Conference showdown at Halton Arena in Charlotte, NC, and we’ve got you covered with our Rice vs. Charlotte prediction.
The Owls meet the 49ers for the second time this season. Three weeks ago, Charlotte outlasted Rice 74-73 as a 1.5-point road favorite. Now, the 49ers are looking for their fourth straight victory over the Owls.
Let’s take a closer look at this Rice vs. Charlotte prediction, one of our NCAAB picks for Friday’s slate. The tip-off at Halton Arena is set at 7:00 PM ET.
Rice’s iffy form continues
The Rice Owls (9-12; 11-8 ATS; 11-8 O/U) have gone 3-5 SU and 6-2 ATS since conference play started. They are 3-3 SU and 5-1 ATS in the last six outings, and the Owls haven’t won consecutive games since mid-December.

Rice is coming off Wednesday’s 83-77 road victory over East Carolina. The Owls missed 10 of their 25 shots from the foul line but went 12-for-28 from beyond the arc. Senior guard Jalen Smith led the way with 21 points, while fellow senior G Trae Broadnax had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Broadnax tallies 15.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, and senior G Nick Anderson adds 14.6 points and 3.8 boards a night. Rice scores 108.3 points per 100 possessions (172nd in the nation) while yielding 113.2 points in return (277th). The Owls are No. 247 in the NCAA NET Rankings.
Charlotte shoots for its fourth straight W
The Charlotte 49ers (12-9; 11-9 ATS; 12-8 O/U) have gone 6-2 SU and 5-3 ATS since the start of conference play and are undefeated in three straight outings. During that three-game stretch, the 49ers have beaten East Carolina 73-70, Tulane 73-70, and Temple 80-76 in overtime.
Last Wednesday, the 49ers upset Temple as 4.5-point road underdogs. Charlotte outrebounded the Owls 34-26 while posting 17 offensive boards. The 49ers went 9-for-23 from deep, and junior center Anton Bonke led the way with 25 points and nine boards.
Sophomore guard Ben Bradford is the team’s leading scorer with 13.7 points per game, while senior guard Dezayne Mingo averages 11.6 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.5 rebounds. Charlotte scores 113.1 points per 100 possessions (100th in the country) and allows 112.6 points in return (268th). The 49ers are No. 155 in the NCAA NET Rankings.
Rice vs. Charlotte Pick
Spread Pick for Rice vs. Charlotte
- Rice +5.5 (5 units)
Charlotte doesn’t force a lot of turnovers (305th in the country in defensive turnover percentage, 14.9%) and ranks 297th in defensive free-throw rate (.408). The 49ers heavily rely on their offense, shooting 37.0% from downtown (39th). Also, the 49ers are 39th in offensive rebound percentage (36.1%) and 78th in free-throw rate (.397).
Rice loves to crash the offensive glass, too. The Owls are 77th in offensive rebound percentage (34.1%), but they rank 323rd in defensive rebound percentage (65.0%). Their defense has been pretty bad this season, and the Owls are 276th in opposing 3-point percentage (35.7%).
Hereof, I expect the 49ers to prevail over the Owls, but covering the spread might be an issue. The Owls are a great 3-point shooting team, too. Rice makes 36.4% of its shots from deep (50th). The Owls should be able to keep it close down the stretch.
Over/Under Pick for Rice vs. Charlotte
- Over 142.5 (5 units)
Although both teams play at a slow pace, I would take the over. As I said, Charlotte allows a lot of free throws, and Rice went 24-for-30 from the foul line in that 74-73 home loss against the 49ers. Moreover, both teams struggle to defend in general while leaning on 3-point shooting a lot and crashing the offensive glass.
The over has hit in four of Rice’s last five games overall and nine of Charlotte’s previous 11. Five of the 49ers’ last six home contests have gone over the line.
