Aztecs are a top-25 defensive team
San Diego State (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS, and 1-2 O/U) was upset 108-107 by Troy in its previous game before the Players Era tourney. The Aztecs score 86.0 points per game (176th) on 49.2 percent shooting (66th), including 41.3 percent from beyond the arc (20th). SDSU gives up 70.0 points per game on defense (78th), and its opponents shoot 40.3 percent from the floor (103rd) with a 30.4 three-point percentage (115th).
The Aztecs return a lot of young talent in 2025-26, as well as a few reliable veterans. Nick Boyd and Jared Coleman-Jones have departed the program, but head coach Brian Dutcher has a deep squad capable of making noise in the NCAA Tournament this season. The Aztecs were unanimously picked to win the Mountain West, receiving all 26 first-place votes, and feature two All-MWC picks, junior guard Miles Byrd (13.7 PPG, 4.0 APG, and 2.3 SPG) and 7-foot sophomore forward Magoon Gwath (20.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 3.0 BPG), and the conference's preseason Freshman of the Year, guard Elzie Harrington (8.3 PPG).
San Diego State features eight players scoring between 7.7 and 20.0 points per game this season. Byrd is a bit of a Swiss Army knife after receiving Second Team All-MWC and All-Defense honors last season, and Gwath was named both MWC Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Senior guard Reese Dixon-Waters (15.5 PPG and 6.0 RPG) is back after missing all of last season, offering two-way experience, and senior forward Jeremiah Oden (10.0 PPG) is a versatile defensive presence. As expected from a Dutcher-coached team, the Aztecs get it done on both ends of the court, as their top three scorers all contribute at least 2.0 steals per game.

Oregon is also active on the defensive end
Oregon (4-0 SU, 0-4 ATS, and 2-2 O/U) beat rival Oregon State 87-75 in its previous game before the tournament. The Ducks score 74.3 points per game (301st) on 40.4 percent shooting (335th), including 31.5 percent from three-point range (248th). They allow 66.5 points per game (39th) on 38.3 percent shooting (44th), including 30.8 percent from deep (126th).
UO returns three players from last season's team, including senior center Nate Bittle (18.8 PPG and 9.8 RPG this season), junior guard Jackson Shelstad (18.3 PPG and 5.0 APG), and junior forward Kwame Evans Jr. (9.8 PPG and 7.0 RPG). Senior guards TJ Bamba and Keeshawn Barthelemy are gone, along with frontcourt contributors Brandon Angel and Jadrian Tracey. Last season's leading scorers, Bittle and Shelstad, will be the wings that make the Ducks fly in 2025-26. A former top-25 recruit, Shelstad was one of the best point guards in the Big Ten last season. Bittle was the best shot blocker in the conference, and he can stretch the floor, too (38.5% three-point shooter). Both shot around 80 percent at the charity stripe in 2024-25.
Oregon hopes to get more out of a few former top recruits in Evans, Duke/Ohio State transfer forward Sean Stewart (6.3 PPG and 5.5 RPG), and Texas transfer forward Devon Pryor (4.3 PPG and 4.3 RPG) this season. All three are athletic and were brimming with upside coming out of high school, but they'll need to start living up to the hype at some point. A few other Ducks to watch include Elon transfer guard Takai Simpkins (14.0 PPG), senior forward Dezdrick Lindsay (16.0 PPG and 7.3 RPG in 2023-24 at Florida Southwestern), and sophomore guard Jamari Phillips (top-50 recruit in 2024 HS class).

San Diego State vs. Oregon Pick and Preview
Moneyline Pick for San Diego State vs. Oregon
- San Diego State ML (5 Units)
I like SDSU to win straight-up as 1.5-point 'dogs on Tuesday.
Both teams are coming off challenging matchups, as SDSU played Michigan on Monday and UO played Auburn, but I like the Aztecs to rally and win their second game of the festival. I'm skeptical that the Ducks can score enough points to win, as they're shooting just 40 percent overall and 31 percent from long range, with only three players averaging double digits and four averaging more than 4.3 points per game. That's not a deep or reliable scoring rotation to lean on against a lengthy, talented Aztecs defense ranked 11th in opponent turnover percentage. San Diego State can score in bunches, too. They dropped over 100 on Troy and can turn to a lot of different players to put the basketball in the hoop. They're effective from beyond the arc and share the rock (17.0 assists/game), which will put pressure on the Ducks' defense for 40 minutes.
Over/Under Pick for San Diego State vs. Oregon
- Over 144.5 (4 Units)
I lean towards the over in Tuesday's game between the Aztecs and Ducks. Oregon isn't deep, but its top scorers are reliable and experienced upperclassmen who won't shrink under pressure. San Diego State is a solid defensive team, but it will be challenged by Bittle and Shelstad, who both knock down the three-ball and hit most of their free throws. The Ducks rank 23rd nationally in free-throw attempts per game, so if they can attack the rim and get SDSU in foul trouble, this game could get high-scoring fast. With San Diego State capable of leading the offensive charge, I believe the 144.5-point total is too low for this matchup.
