USF compiled a 25-10 record last season, including 13-5 in West Coast Conference play. The Dons finished third in the conference's regular season standings and lost in the semifinals of the WCC Tournament. They accepted an invitation to the NIT, where they lost in the second round. San Francisco has been to the NIT in consecutive years and made the NCAA Tournament in 2022. Heading into its fourth season under head coach Chris Gerlufsen (69-35 record), USF was picked to finish third in the WCC Preseason Poll.
The Dons need to replace their leading scorers, but they remain an experienced team, returning seven players from their 2024-25 roster. The headliners of the returning group are Preseason All-WCC Team selection guards Tyrone Riley IV (9.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, and 50.2% FG% last season) and Ryan Beasley (9.0 PPG). Beasley was moved into the starting rotation in his last three games, averaging 20.3 points and 4.7 assists on 53.7 percent shooting, including 45.0 percent from three-point range. San Francisco also welcomes eight newcomers, including five transfers. Freshman guard Legend Smiley led the Dons with 18 points against UC Santa Barbara, while Oregon transfer forward Mookie Cook contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. Another player to watch is 7-foot senior forward Guillermo Diaz Graham, who started 25 games last season at Pittsburgh.

Memphis landed several talented guards in the portal
Memphis hasn't played an official game yet, but faced ranked Arkansas and Auburn teams in preseason exhibitions. The Tigers started fast against the Razorbacks, but were outscored 57-30 in the second half, losing 99-75 at home in the St. Jude Tip Off Classic. It was the opposite against the Tigers, who jumped all over Memphis from the opening tip in their 100-71 win in The Bad Boy Mowers Series at State Farm Arena.
Memphis went 29-6 last season (16-2 in conference play), winning both the American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Tigers were selected as a five-seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament, but were upset by Colorado State in the first round. Former NBA and Memphis star Penny Hardaway is in his eighth season as the team's head coach (162-68 record). The Tigers were picked to win the AAC in the conference's preseason poll, receiving 11 of the 13 first-place votes.
Hardaway leads a new-look Memphis roster this season, led by preseason all-conference selections Dug McDaniel and Aaron Bradshaw. McDaniel, a senior guard transfer from Kansas State, averaged 11.4 points and 4.9 dimes last season. Bradshaw, a junior forward from Ohio State, averaged 6.0 points in 16.9 minutes per game. With zero returners from last season's squad, the Tigers were active in the transfer portal, adding a strong group of guards in McDaniel, Sincere Parker (McNeese State), Quante Berry (Temple), Zachary Davis (South Carolina), and Julius Thedford (Western Kentucky).

San Francisco vs. Memphis Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for San Francisco vs. Memphis
- Dons +5 (5 Units)
This is a quality non-con matchup in the first weekend of college hoops action. Both teams have a wealth of talented guards, but the Tigers lack frontcourt depth behind Bradshaw. That will be an issue against a Dons team that has a lot of experience at the forward positions with Diaz Graham (6.2 PPG and 5.0 RPG), junior Junjie Wang (24 starts for USF last season), and Rhode Island junior transfer David Fuchs (7.4 PPG and 7.5 RPG). San Francisco also boasts a more experienced, cohesive roster, while Memphis has zero returners.
The Dons led the Tigers by nine points at the half last season, but blew an opportunity to pick up a key non-conference win for their strength of schedule. That matters for a team with NCAA Tournament aspirations. They won't make the same mistake this year, playing a complete game against a Memphis squad that was overwhelmed in its two exhibition games. Bet on USF to cover the spread!
Over/Under Pick for San Francisco vs. Memphis
- Over 156 (5 Units)
Saturday's game between San Francisco and Memphis projects to be high-tempo. With experienced, veteran guards handling the basketball for both teams, there should be plenty of up-and-down action on the floor at FedExForum. The Tigers were among the fastest-paced teams in the NCAA last season, ranking 32nd in possessions per game, while the Dons were also high-tempo (71.0 possessions/game). Memphis' lack of defense in its two exhibitions also suggests this roster could struggle on that end of the court this season. It may not be an overreaction to say this may be Hardaway's worst defensive team at Memphis. While the Dons aren't as talented as the Razorbacks and Tigers, they will be in the mix to win the WCC and have plenty of scorers. Bet on the over.
