The Broncos failed to cover a 5.5-point spread and fell to 13-2 in conference play. Back in January, Santa Clara lost at then-No. 8 Gonzaga 89-77 as a 17-point road underdog.

Last Saturday, the Broncos gave up 50 second-half point to the Zags, who shot 56.2% from the field (3-for-18 from deep) and committed just nine turnovers. The Broncos made 46.1% of their field goals (9-for-24 from deep) while posting a 14/12 assist-to-turnover ratio. Sophomore guard Christian Hammond led the way for Santa Clara with 16 points and three assists.
Hammond is one of three Broncos with points per game in double figures. He tallies 16.4 points and 2.4 assists a night, shooting 39.3% from beyond the arc. Senior forward Elijah Mahi posts 13.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, and sophomore forward Allen Graves averages 11.4 points and 6.9 rebounds.
Santa Clara is No. 40 in the NCAA NET Rankings. The Broncos score 123.5 points per 100 possessions (24th in the country) and allow 102.8 points in return (61st). They are 25th in the country in offensive rebound percentage (36.6%) and 18th in defensive turnover percentage (20.6%).
San Francisco is coming off a heavy loss
The San Francisco Dons (15-14; 12-16 ATS; 15-13 O/U) have only won one of their last five games overall. After stopping their three-game slide with a 92-79 road victory over San Diego, the Dons suffered an 80-59 home defeat against No. 11 Gonzaga this past Wednesday.
The Dons couldn’t cope with the Zags, who covered a 15.5-point spread with ease. Gonzaga shot 54.8% from the field (5-for-17 from deep) and committed just seven turnovers. San Francisco made only 35.7% of its field goals (5-for-24 from deep) while notching a 13/13 assist-to-turnover ratio. Sophomore guard Tyrone Riley led the way for the Dons with 16 points and two rebounds.
Riley averages 11.6 points and 5.1 rebounds on the season. Junior guard Ryan Beasley tallies 13.4 points, 3.9 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game, and junior forward David Fuchs adds 11.7 points and 7.3 boards a night. Beasley scored just three points against Gonzaga last Wednesday.
The Dons are 7-9 in conference play and No. 124 in the NCAA NET Rankings. They score 113.5 points per 100 possessions (101st in the country) while yielding 109.9 points in return (189th). San Francisco is 66th in the country in defensive rebound percentage (72.0%) and 144th in offensive rebound percentage (31.8%).
Santa Clara vs. San Francisco Pick
Spread Pick for Santa Clara vs. San Francisco
- Santa Clara (4 units)
The Broncos are not a great defensive unit, but they certainly look like a better defensive team than San Francisco. In their first meeting this season, the Broncos dropped 88 points on the Dons while shooting 50.8% from the field (12-for-26 from deep). The Dons committed as twice as many turnovers than Santa Clara and made just six of their 19 attempts from beyond the 3-point line.
San Francisco is 168th in the country in 3-point percentage (34.1%), and that number dropped to 32.8% in conference play. The Dons struggle to force turnovers and are dead last in the WCC in defensive turnover percentage (12.9%), whereas the Broncos lead conference play in defensive turnover percentage (21.2%).
Hereof, I’m backing Santa Clara to extend its ATS winning streak over San Francisco.
Over/Under Pick for Santa Clara vs. San Francisco
- Over (4 units)
The Broncos lead the WCC in 2-point percentage (60.1%) and are fourth in 3-point percentage (36.6%). They play at the fastest pace in conference play, recording 71.5 possessions per 40 minutes. As I noted, the Broncos love to crash the offensive glass, though the Dons have weapons to contain Santa Clara on the glass.
Anyway, I expect a high-scoring affair. Both teams lean on 3-point shooting a lot. The Dons register 66.7 possessions per 40 minutes in conference play (9th in the WCC), but I don’t think they will be able to slow the Broncos down. The over is 9-3 in San Francisco’s last 12 games overall, and it is 5-1 in Santa Clara’s previous six.
