Can Seattle bounce back from a humbling defeat?

Seattle (12-5 SU, 6-9 ATS, and 7-8 O/U) lost 97-76 on the road at St. Mary's on Sunday. The Redhawks, who are 1-3 in WCC play this season, led by five at the break but were dominated 54-32 after halftime. The Gaels shot 54 percent from the field, including 9-for-17 (53%) from three-point range, and outrebounded the visitors 46-19, collecting 17 offensive rebounds. They also scored 50 points in the paint and recorded an assist on 24 of their 34 made field goals. It was a letdown performance by a Seattle squad that took seventh-ranked Gonzaga to overtime in their previous game.

The Redhawks are led in scoring by senior guard Brayden Maldonado, who averages 15.2 points on 44.3 percent shooting. He hits 95.1 percent of his free throws and knocks down 38.7 percent of his three-pointers. A few other Redhawks to watch on Thursday against Oregon State are sophomore forward Will Heimbrodt (13.6 PPG and 5.0 RPG), senior forward Junseok Yeo (12.3 PPG and 3.8 RPG), and 7-foot sophomore center Austin Maurer (8.0 PPG and 4.6 RPG in 17.1 MPG).

Seattle scores 78.2 points per game (223rd) on 46.8 percent shooting (109th), including 35.4 percent from three-point range (104th). The Redhawks' defense surrenders 68.3 points per game (44th) on 41.0 percent shooting (70th), including 30.9 percent from beyond the arc (84th). KenPom ranks Seattle 111th nationally, including 97th in offensive efficiency rating and 50th in defensive efficiency rating.

Oregon State has struggled to get over the .500 mark

Oregon State (8-9 SU, 6-11 ATS, and 9-8 O/U) lost 81-67 on the road to Washington State in its previous game. The Beavers, who are 1-3 in West Coast Conference competition, trailed by 14 at halftime and never recovered. They never led and trailed by as many as 21 points, as the Cougars shot 48 percent and dominated on the glass (+13 rebounding margin with 14 offensive rebounds).

Junior guard Josiah Lake II leads Oregon State in scoring, averaging 13.5 points on 51.6 percent shooting. He also contributes 4.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. A few other Beavers to watch against Seattle are junior guard Dez White (11.1 PPG and 3.2 RPG), junior forward Isaiah Sy (9.4 PPG and 3.4 RPG), and sophomore forward Johan Munch (6.5 PPG and 4.3 RPG).

OSU scores 75.4 points per game (271st) on 43.4 percent shooting (276th), including 35.4 percent from beyond the arc (101st). The Beavers' defense allows 79.7 points per game (251st) on 44.1 percent shooting (217th), including 32.9 percent from three-point distance (176th). KenPom ranks Oregon State 223rd in the country, including 189th in offensive efficiency rating and 244th in defensive efficiency rating.

Seattle vs. Oregon State Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Seattle vs. Oregon State

  • Redhawks -4.5 (5 Units)

The Redhawks have won seven of their last ten straight-up, and one of those losses was in overtime to Gonzaga. Save for their second-half collapse at St. Mary's, they have been competitive in all of their previous defeats this season, losing by an average differential of 5.2 points in those games. They should score enough against the Beavers' weak defense, but I'm most confident in their ability on the other end of the court.

Seattle is a top-50 defensive team, as they lock in at the three-point line (30.9% opponent 3PT%) and at the rim, where they hold the average opponent to 53.0 percent shooting (ranked 30th nationally), per Haslametrics. Their three-point defense will be especially impactful against an Oregon State squad that attempts a lot of threes (32nd-highest 3PT rate).

The Beavers have lost three of their previous four games, and were uncompetitive in each defeat, losing by an average of 27.6 points per game. I don't envision them covering the 4.5-point spread on Thursday.

Over/Under Pick for Seattle vs. Oregon State

  • Under 139 (4 Units)

Oregon State is among the slowest-paced teams in college hoops, ranking 318th in schedule-adjusted tempo, according to KenPom. The Beavers can also be too loose with the basketball, with 16.7% turnover percentage (ranked 281st). They enter this matchup ranked 293rd in Haslametrics' offensive momentum metric, as their overreliance on the three-point shot results in inconsistent play. Given how well the Redhawks defend the three-point line and near-proximity shots, the Beavers are likely to score below their 70.9 PPG season average on Thursday.

While Seattle will have some offensive success, the game's slow pace will limit its scoring opportunities. The Redhawks aren't likely to generate many second-chance scoring chances, either. They rank 297th nationally in offensive rebounding percentage and 326th in second-chance conversion percentage.
