Seton Hall eyes its third straight win
The Seton Hall Pirates (16-6; 13-9 ATS; 8-13-1 O/U) put an end to their four-game losing streak last Wednesday, beating Xavier 86-68 as 5.5-point home favorites. Three days later, the Pirates outlasted Marquette 69-64 as 6.5-point home favorites to advance to 6-5 in conference play.
The Pirates overcame an eight-point halftime deficit last Saturday, outscoring Marquette 36-23 in the second half. Seton Hall shot 50.9% from the field (4-for-10 from deep), and junior guard Adam Clark led the charge with 19 points, six assists, and three rebounds.
Clark tallies 11.3 points and 4.6 assists per game, while senior guard A.J. Staton-McCray averages 11.6 points and 3.3 rebounds. The Pirates score 108.3 points per 100 possessions (187th in the nation) and allow 95.6 points in return (16th). Seton Hall is No. 49 in the NCAA NET Rankings.
Villanova hopes to stay on track
The Villanova Wildcats (16-5; 14-7 ATS; 12-9 O/U) have gone 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS in their last five outings, alternating wins and losses in the process. During that stretch, the Wildcats have beaten Providence twice, 88-82 and 87-73, and Georgetown once, 66-51, while losing against St. John’s 86-79 and UConn 75-67 in overtime.
Last Friday, the Wildcats beat Providence by 14 points at home, covering a 9-point spread with ease. Villanova went 13-for-29 from downtown while posting a shiny 18/5 assist-to-turnover ratio. Senior guard Devin Askew led the way with 20 points and three assists, and the Wildcats improved to 7-3 in conference play.
Villanova has six players with points per game in double figures. Junior guard Bryce Lindsay is the leading scorer with 14.0 points per game, while senior forward Duke Brennan posts 12.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. The Wildcats score 121.0 points per 100 possessions (38th) and allow 100.1 points in return (39th). They are No. 33 in the NCAA NET Rankings.
Seton Hall vs. Villanova Pick
Spread Pick for Seton Hall vs. Villanova
- Villanova -6.5 (5 units)
The Pirates lean on their sturdy defense. They are seventh in the country in defensive turnover percentage (22.1%) and 13th in opposing 2-point percentage (45.5%). However, the Pirates’ offense leaves a lot to be desired. Seton Hall ranks 307th in 2-point percentage (47.5%) and 296th in 3-point percentage (31.4%).
The Wildcats are arguably a better offensive team than Seton Hall. Villanova makes 36.7% of its shots from deep (41st) and 54.0% of its shots from inside the arc (98th). The Wildcats are a solid defensive unit, so I’m backing them to beat the Pirates once more and cover the spread along the way.
On December 23, the Wildcats held the Pirates to 33.3% shooting from the field. Seton Hall made just three of its 13 shots from deep, whereas Villanova went 10-for-23 from beyond the arc. The Pirates posted 16 offensive rebounds (Villanova had eight) and committed nine fewer turnovers than the Wildcats, but it wasn’t enough.
Over/Under Pick for Seton Hall vs. Villanova
- Under 128.5 (5 units)
The Wildcats play at a slow pace, recording just 63.0 possessions per 40 minutes (352nd in the country). The Pirates register 65.6 possessions per 40 minutes (263rd), so I can only look at the under when it comes to the total in this game.
As I noted, the Pirates heavily rely on their defense. Seton Hall’s offense is far from elite level, and the Pirates are 363rd in the country in 3-point rate (.268). The under is 4-1 on their last five games overall.
On the other side, the over is 7-1 in Villanova’s last eight games overall. The Wildcats are a very dangerous offensive team, but they won’t have an easy task against the Pirates’ aggressive defense.
