South Carolina is an offensively-challenged squad

South Carolina (12-16 SU, 13-15 ATS, and 15-13 O/U) lost 72-63 to Kentucky on Tuesday, failing to cover the 7.5-point spread. The Gamecocks, who have dropped eight of their last ten games (5-5 ATS), shot 37 percent from the field and 28 percent from long range. They were dominated on the glass, as the Wildcats outrebounded them 48-28 and grabbed 18 offensive boards.

South Carolina (3-12 in SEC play this season) is led by senior guard Meechie Johnson, who scores 17.1 points per game on 42.0 percent shooting. He also averages 4.3 assists per game. A few other Gamecocks to watch in Saturday's game against Georgia are senior guard Mike Sharavjamts (11.1 PPG and 5.4 RPG), junior forward Elijah Strong (10.7 PPG), and senior guard Kobe Knox (10.6 PPG).

Defensively, the Gamecocks give up 76.3 points per game (214th) on 44.9 percent shooting (228th), including 31.6 percent from three (64th). South Carolina Gamecocks Injury Report:

  • Senior guard Myles Stute (6.1 PPG and 4.0 RPG) is questionable.

Bulldogs are an elite offensive unit

Georgia (19-9 SU, 13-15 ATS, and 15-13 O/U) lost 88-80 on the road to Vanderbilt on Wednesday, failing to cover as 7.5-point betting 'dogs. The Bulldogs never led and trailed by as many as 20 points, as the Commodores knocked down 49 percent of their shots and scored 21 at the free-throw line. They also won the battle on the boards (+7 rebounding margin) and outscored the Dawgs 44-26 in the paint.

Georgia averages 89.8 points (7th) on 46.9 percent shooting (81st), including 33.1 percent from beyond the arc (244th). Defensively, the Dawgs allow 78.8 points per game (277th) on 43.6 percent shooting (147th), including 33.2 percent from three-point distance (152nd). UGA ranks 35th in NET rating, including 17th in offensive efficiency and 79th in defensive efficiency, per KenPom.

Sophomore guard Jeremiah Wilkinson paces Georgia in scoring at 17.7 points per game. He shoots 42.5 percent from the field, including 35.4 percent from beyond the arc. A few other Bulldogs players to watch against South Carolina are junior guard Blue Cain (13.7 PPG and 5.2 RPG), junior guard Marcus Millender (11.8 PPG and 3.9 APG), and sophomore forward Kanon Catchings (10.9 PPG and 4.7 RPG).

South Carolina vs. Georgia Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for South Carolina vs. Georgia

  • Bulldogs cover (5 Units)

UGA will lock in defensively to win and cover the spread at home. The Bulldogs lead the SEC in opponent turnover percentage in conference play (4th nationally in quick points off breakaway steals) and allow the lowest opponent free-throw attempt rate. Those turnovers and lack of free throws will hamper a Gamecocks offense that's last in the SEC in effective field goal percentage, adjusted offensive efficiency, 2PT%, and 3PT% in conference play this season. USC also enters this matchup ranked 315th nationally in offensive momentum, according to Haslametrics, and it hasn't played well on the road this season (1-7 road record), either.

Georgia is a top-tier offensive team (83.7 PPG last four games), ranked 39th in near-proximity shooting percentage on a high attempt rate, 4th in quick points off offensive rebounds, and 21st in second-chance conversion percentage. The Dawgs simply have too much offense for the offensively-challenged Gamecocks to keep up. Bet on UGA to cover the spread!

Over/Under Pick for South Carolina vs. Georgia

  • Under (4 Units)

Georgia should win and cover, but I question whether they will push the tempo late in the game. This isn't an important game for them, and Alabama is up next on their schedule. The Dawgs will score plenty of buckets in the first half, but they aren't likely to keep scoring in bunches with a commanding lead. On the other end of the court, South Carolina will struggle to generate enough easy points to keep the score close. They aren't efficient inside or beyond the arc, and the Bulldogs will force turnovers and limit their free throws (41st-lowest opponent FT attempt rate).

The under is 4-1 in the Gamecocks' last five games. It's also 5-1 in the previous six matchups between South Carolina and Georgia. With SC's season basically over and UGA looking ahead to a more impactful matchup vs the Tide, I don't expect a competitive or high-scoring game. Bet on the under!
