The Eagles, who never trailed by more than two points, shot 46 percent from the field and scored 28 points at the charity stripe. JMU shot 4-for-20 from beyond the arc and missed 11 free throws.

Marshall is a deadly three-point shooting squad

Marshall (14-8 SU, 9-12 ATS, and 10-11 O/U) beat Arkansas State 70-61 on Saturday as 3.5-point road underdogs. The Thundering Herd led for most of the game and shot 45 percent from the field, including 40 percent from beyond the arc. The Red Wolves were held to 33 percent shooting and missed 25 threes.

The Herd are 6-4 in Sun Belt play this season, good for fourth in the conference standings. They have won seven of their previous ten games, covering the spread four times. Southern Miss vs. Marshall Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Southern Miss vs. Marshall

  • Herd -8.5 (5 Units)

Marshall has been the much better team recently and has played well on both ends of the court in Sun Belt play, leading me to believe they will win by double digits on Wednesday. The Herd has shot 38 percent from beyond the arc in conference play, while the Eagles have struggled to defend the perimeter, ranking 13th (out of 14 teams) in opponent 3PT%. That isn't new, either, as they rank outside the top 300 nationally in three-point defense for the season. On top of this, Marshall is tough to defend around the rim, ranking 28th in near-proximity percentage vs. the average opponent, per Haslametrics.

The Eagles have also hit very few three-balls on offense, as they have connected on just 27.8 percent of their treys in Sun Belt competition. I'm concerned they will fall behind early and find it challenging to climb back into the game, as they don't do much well offensively other than get to the free-throw line. With a comfortable lead, the Herd will play more relaxed defensively, sagging off the Eagles and allowing them to take jump shots instead.

Over/Under Pick for Southern Miss vs. Marshall

  • Under 147.5 (5 Units)

I see some value in a bet on the under at 147.5.

USM enters this matchup on a poor offensive streak, ranking 360th nationally in offensive momentum. They have been careless with the basketball, struggled to hit threes, and have been average from two-point range in conference play, contributing to their losing streak. Marshall is ranked third in opponent eFG% in Sun Belt competition, as its perimeter defense (30% opponent 3PT%) has been especially stout. In short, I don't see where the points will come from when the Eagles have the basketball. If they aren't competitive early, I don't predict them climbing back into the game and getting the best out of the Herd's offense in the second half. With a commanding lead, Marshall will likely take out its key contributors and coast late in the game, leading to a lower total.
