St. John’s Remains Atop Big East

The St. John’s Red Storm are seeking their 16th conference win of the season. St. John’s is battling atop the Big East with UConn. They stand in first place with a 15-1 conference record. The Red Storm are one of the hottest teams in the country. They have won 15 of their past 16 games. Their only conference blemish came in the first week of January, a defeat against Providence.

Zuby Ejiofor is enjoying a dominating season. The senior forward has surpassed 20 points on five occasions in conference play. He scored 15 points on Saturday and has delivered an average of 15.9 PPG and 7.5 RPG. Bryce Hopkins has been inconsistent at times, but has shot above 50% in three of his past five efforts. The senior forward is averaging 14 PPG.

Oziyah Sellers scored 10 points on Saturday. The senior guard has recorded an average of 10.9 PPG. Ian Jackson has scored double digits in three of his past 10 games. The sophomore guard has issued an average of 10.4 PPG. Dillon Mitchell netted six points on Tuesday. The senior forward has registered 8.7 PPG.

The Red Storm are ranked 22nd in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings and climbed two spots to #15 in the recent edition of the AP Top 25. St. John’s is 8-0 on the road, including a win against DePaul. They are averaging 83.9 points on the season, marking them 75th. The Red Storm defense is a strength. They have conceded 70 or fewer points in three of their past five games and are keeping opponents to 72 points, placing them 105th.

UConn Rebounds in Road Win

The Connecticut Huskies are targeting their 16th Big East win of the season. UConn stands just behind St. John’s in the top spot in the Big East standings. They have a dominant 15-2 record, 0.5 games behind the Red Storm. They won their first 12 conference games, including many narrow decisions. They needed OT to beat Providence and Villanova. The Huskies' first Big East defeat came against this St. John’s team a few weeks ago.

The Huskies were dealt an upset loss by Creighton last weekend and posted a big 73-63 road win against Villanova on Tuesday in a bout that had the Huskies marked as three-point favorites. UConn shot 55% in the win and kept Villanova to a 40% efficiency. The Huskies have covered the spread in one of their past five games.

Solo Ball is capable of big numbers.  The junior guard has been shaky at times. He was quiet in the recent win, sinking nine points on Saturday, and is sporting an average of 14.2 PPG. Tarris Reed Jr. has connected on 50% of his field goals in all but one conference game. The senior center has posted an average of 13.6 PPG.

Alex Karaban has scored at least 15 points in three of his past five games. The senior forward is averaging 12.9 PPG and 5.3 RPG. Braylon Muillins has been steady, sinking double digits in five straight games. The freshman guard has yielded an average of 12.3 PPG. Silas Demary Jr. netted at least 11 points in five of his past six efforts. The junior guard has contributed with 11.4 PPG.

The Huskies are rated 11th in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings and ranked #6 in the AP Top 25. They stand at 13-2 at home. UConn is posting an average of 79.2 points on the year, marking them 132nd. The Huskies have conceded 75 or more points in three of their past five games and are keeping opponents to an average of 66 points, placing them 16th in the country.

St. John’s vs. UConn Pick

Spread Pick for St. John’s vs. UConn

  • St. John's Red Storm +5 (5 units)

The St. John’s Red Storm are playing with confidence. They have not lost a game since the beginning of January. They have won 15 of their past 16 games, including a win against this UConn team a few weeks ago. The Huskies are obviously one of the better teams, but they have not been winning by decisive margins. They have only covered the spread in three of their past 10 games.

Furthermore, St. John’s has the scoring punch to keep up with UConn. St. John’s is averaging 121 points per 100 possessions, only 2.3 fewer points per 100 than UConn. St. John’s exposed the Huskies in the first meeting, scoring 81 points on 50% shooting. The Huskies also lost their previous home game in an upset against Creighton.

Over/Under Pick for St. John’s vs. UConn

  • Over 145 (5 units)

I expect a shootout in this one. The over cashed by nine points in the meeting just a few weeks ago. St. John’s plays at a quick tempo, ranking 25th in the country in pace. They have been consistent, scoring 76 or more points in nine of their past 11 games. The Huskies have squandered an average of 76 points in their past five games, above their season average.

In addition, UConn is also a potent offense squad. They are shooting 36.6% from deep. This is key when considering the Red Storm are mediocre when it comes to defending threes, ranking 122nd in DI. The over is a convincing 5-0 in the Huskies' past five home games.
