Stanford is tough defensively on the perimeter
Stanford (16-10 SU, 14-12 ATS, and 10-16 O/U) has been off since February 14, when it lost 68-63 at Wake Forest. Both teams shot 42 percent from the field, but the Cardinal attempted 14 free throws and the Demon Deacons attempted 32. Stanford led for most of the game, but that was the difference in the game, as Wake Forest converted those foul shots into 28 points, 19 more than the visitors.

The Cardinal is just 3-7 in its last ten games (5-5 ATS), and the total went under six times. It is 5-8 in ACC competition this season. Stanford is coached by Kyle Smith, who is in his second season at the helm after previous stints at Columbia (101-82 record), San Francisco (63-40), and Washington State (94-71). The Cardinal scores 75.4 points per game (232nd) on 43.0 percent shooting (300th) and 34.5 percent from beyond the arc (158th). Stanford's opponents average 72.6 points per game (113th) on 45.9 percent shooting (280th), including 33.4 percent from deep (170th).
Freshman guard Ebuka Okorie leads the team in scoring, averaging 22.5 points per game on 44.0 percent shooting. He also averages 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. A few other Stanford players to watch against California are senior guard Benny Gealer (10.5 PPG), senior guard Jeremy Dent-Smith (8.5 PPG), and senior forward AJ Rohosy (7.1 PPG and 5.3 RPG). KenPom ranks the Cardinal 75th in the country, including 90th in offensive efficiency and 71st in defensive efficiency.
Stanford Cardinal Injury Report:
- Senior forward Chisom Okpara (13.9 PPG in 19 games) is out with a lower-body injury.
Golden Bears hope to get a key piece back on Saturday
Cal (18-8 SU, 13-12 ATS, and 13-12 O/U) beat Boston College 86-75 in its last game (Feb. 14), covering the spread as 3.5-point betting favorites. The Golden Bears shot 56 percent overall, including 14-for-29 (48%) from three, and scored 28 points in the paint. The Eagles dominated on the glass (+10 rebounding margin and 15 offensive rebounds), but fell behind early and never led in the game.
California is 5-5 in its previous ten games, including 6-4 against the spread. The total went over in six games. The Golden Bears, who are 6-7 in ACC play this season, are led by former NBA player Mark Madsen. The Stanford alum previously coached at Utah Valley (70-51 record in four years) and has a 44-46 record in three seasons with Cal. The Golden Bears score 82.1 points per game (82nd) on 45.0 percent shooting (194th) and 37.7 percent from beyond the arc (21st). Their opponents average 75.9 points per game (196th) on 43.2 percent shooting (123rd), including 30.6 percent from deep (35th).
Junior guard Dai Dai Ames paces California in scoring, averaging 17.1 points on 47.7 percent shooting. He also hits 39.3 percent of his threes and 85.6 percent of his free throws. A few other Golden Bears to watch against Stanford are sophomore guard Justin Pippen (14.0 PPG and 4.4 APG), senior forward John Camden (14.2 PPG and 4.7 RPG), and senior forward Chris Bell (13.5 PPG). KenPom ranks Cal 68th in the country, including 74th in offensive efficiency and 80th in defensive efficiency.
California Golden Bears Injury Report:
- Senior forward Lee Dort (8.3 PPG and 7.7 RPG) is questionable with a thigh injury. He missed the last six games, but Maden said there's a "50-50 chance" he plays on Saturday against Stanford.
Stanford vs. Cal Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Stanford vs. Cal
- Golden Bears -1.5 (4 Units)
Cal could use Dort back, as his toughness and rebounding are valuable traits, but I'm convinced it can win with or without him on Saturday. The Golden Bears won the first matchup by 12, even as Dort exited with a thigh injury after playing just 13 minutes. They were especially gritty defensively and hit 40 percent of their three-balls on the other end of the court. Pippen and Camden can score in bunches, and the energy in Haas Pavilion will be challenging for the Cardinal to overcome. Okorie is a good leading scorer, but without Okpara, Stanford lacks a second star. The Golden Bears are stout on the perimeter and don't allow many second-chance buckets, especially at home.
Bet on Cal to cover!
Over/Under Pick for Stanford vs. Cal
- Under 148.5 (4 Units)
These teams combined for 144 points in the first matchup, as Stanford struggled offensively. Will that change on the road in the rematch? I doubt they'll feel more comfortable. The Golden Bears will make them work on each possession, challenging them on the perimeter and limiting them to one shot per possession. They also rank in the top 50 in quick points allowed off breakaway steals, as they took good care of the basketball. On offense, Cal will be challenged by a pesky Stanford defense that allows the fourth-lowest opponent three-point attempt rate. The Cardinal are also ranked in the top 50 in quick points allowed off second-chance offensive rebounds and opponent steals.
