Islanders should contend in the Southland
Texas A&M CC opened up with a non-Division I win over Trinity (TX) 83-56, followed by road losses 69-58 to SMU and 85-77 to Tarleton State. Leading the team through three games are Sheldon Williams (15.7 ppg, 11 rpg), Mason Gibson (13.7 ppg), and Kam Parker (10.7 ppg).
The Islanders were rated No. 165 by the Sports Illustrated preseason rankings and No. 2 in the Southland Conference. Last season, Texas A&M Corpus Christi finished 150th in the KenPom rankings and 20-14 overall. The program is led by head coach Jim Shaw, who now has a 42-28 record at the beginning of his third season.

Kansas coming off a loss to UNC
The No. 25 Kansas Jayhawks (1-1) return home looking to bounce back after an 87-74 loss to North Carolina. Kansas opened its season with a dominant 94-51 win over Green Bay.
Kansas finished 21-13 (11-9 Big 12) last season and lost to Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The program is led by head coach Bill Self who enters his 22nd season in Lawrence with an 836-256 career record (609-148 at Kansas). Despite heavy offseason turnover, the Jayhawks have reloaded on paper with a blend of dynamic freshmen and strong additions from the transfer portal.
Darryn Peterson, a freshman guard from Canton, Ohio, has made an immediate impact, averaging 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.0 steals through two games while shooting 60% from the field and 50% from deep. Returning sophomore forward Flory Bidunga is also off to a strong start with 15.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 1.5 pg on 65% shooting. Senior transfer Melvin Council Jr. from St. Bonaventure leads the team with 5.5 assists per game.
Texas A&M CC vs Kansas Predictions
Spread Pick and Prediction for Texas A&M CC vs KansasΒ Β
- Texas A&M Corpus Christi +25.5 (3 units)
Texas A&M Corpus Christi doesn't have the big program name, but they have a solid team. The Islanders covered and competed as a 23.5-point underdog against SMU last Thursday and are expected to be contenders in the Southland. Although I expect Kansas to win by margin, I expect to see the Islanders keep this with-in 23 points.
Texas A&M CC vs Kansas Total Prediction:
- Under 147.5 (3 units)
With Texas A&M-CC 218th in adjusted tempo and Kansas 230th, expect a solid pace that leans slightly on the slower side. Since last season the Jayhawks are 3-11 to the over/under in non-conference games and I see Corpus Christi struggling to score in this game against a Kansas team that is 16th in adjusted defensive efficiency. I will take the under.
