Towson finished 22-11 overall last season and 16-2 in the CAA, before falling in the conference tournament semifinals to No. 12 seed Delaware. Towson brought in several transfers, including wing Jack Doumbia (11.6ppg, 5.7rpg) from Wright State, to help fill the void of losing starting wing Christian May, who transferred to CAA-rival UNCW.
In their opener against close rival Loyola, the Tigers took the game 67-56 from Baltimore's CFG Arena. Houston trying to get back to title game
The No. 2 Cougars return three starters from a National Championship runner-up team that went 35-5 last season and 19-1 in the Big 12. The Cougars lose G L.J. Cryer (15.7ppg) and F J'Wan Roberts (10.6ppg, 6.5rpg). Head coach Kelvin Sampson added Utah State transfer Kalifa Sakho, but the recruiting class of Chris Cenac Jr., PG Kingston Flemings and guard Isaiah Harwell will tell how far this team goes.
On Monday, they took care of business against Lehigh, winning 75-57 at home as a 35.5-point favorite. The victory gave Sampson his 800th win and is now 300-84 since taking over at Houston in 2014. Sharp led the way with 24 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Cenac added 12 points and 10 rebounds in 27 minutes. Towson vs. Houston Pick
Spread Pick for Towson vs. Houston
- Houston to cover (4 units)
The Cougars were just warming up in the first game, and they were a little overvalued. Sharp is one of the best guards in the Big 12, and his pressure, along with the other wings, will be too much for Towson to handle. Tejada is a very good mid-major player, but had just six points on 2-of-8 shooting during the last time the Tigers met the Cougars. Williamson was shut out, going 0-for-5 from the field. Houston's defense will be tough for anybody, and their offense will be a little more in sync after the first game.
Total Prediction for Towson vs. Houston
- Under (4 units)
Last season, Towson played at a 347th pace, which won't change much with Pat Skerry returning as head coach for his 15th season. Houston was at 129th in pace of play, but they were 362nd after the first game. The Tigers will attempt to slow it down as much as possible. Houston has gone under in four of their last five games including the opening contest against Lehigh.
