Tigers get run over by Knights in Orlando

Towson played in Orlando in late November in the ESPN Events Invitational and went 2-1, beating the likes of Liberty and Rhode Island, before falling in the final to UC San Diego. Towson responded to the 14-point loss by defeating Cornell at home 93-80. But on Dec. 7, the Tigers were crushed at UCF (also in Orlando), 86-61. This was a game where Towson was never really in it, getting down 47-27 at the half and wound up losing by 25.

The Tigers are led by junior forward Tyler Tejada (18.8ppg, 5.7rpg), who plays over 36 minutes per game. Last season, he was named CAA Player of the Year and decided to return when most players at the mid-major level would leave for a high-major school for more NIL. Redshirt junior guard Dylan Williamson adds 15.6 points and 3.3 assists, while shooting 34.2% from long range.

The Tigers are ranked 136th in the last Net Rankings, 142nd on KenPom, 164th on Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and 133rd in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency.

Council leads Jayhawks over Wolfpack

Melvin Council Jr. scored 36 points and recorded nine 3-pointers in the Jayhawks' overtime win over NC State on Saturday. Council Jr. is a transfer from St. Bonaventure, who was averaging just 10.7 points in his first 10 games before playing the Wolfpack. Freshman Darryn Peterson (6-6, 205) added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Overall, the Jayhawks shot just 43% from the field, but held NC State to just 38% shooting and 9-of-34 (26%) from beyond the arc.

Peterson is the Jayhawks' top player, who is averaging 19.3 points per game and is shooting 52.8% from the field (42.3% 3pt). He's been dealing with a hamstring issue and then left the NC State game due to cramping in his leg. Tre White (6-7, 215), an Illinois transfer, adds 14.1 points and 7.0 rebounds, while shooting 51.2% from the field (37.1% 3pt). Kansas' only losses came to UConn, Duke and North Carolina.

Kansas ranks 16th in the latest Net Rankings, 17th in KenPom, 59th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency, and 9th in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency rating.

Spread Pick for Towson vs. Kansas

Towson vs. Kansas Pick and Prediction

  • Kansas -17.5 (4 units)

Kansas has played a very tough schedule, ranking fourth in the nation. They face two mid-majors coming up in Towson and Davidson, before they face UCF on Jan. 3 in Big 12 action. But when Kansas was a big favorite, they covered against Green Bay (-30) and Texas A&M CC (-25). They've covered five of the last six games, and while their offense could be shaky if Peterson doesn't play (he should), their defense in terms of length and pressure, will overwhelm a pretty good Towson team. Kansas is 79th in assist-turnover-ratio, while Towson is 315th. KU is also tough at home defensively, allowing teams to shoot just 24.5% from three-point range and 33.5% from the field, while Towson is shooting a dismal 23.3% from three-point range away from home.

Over/Under Pick for Towson vs. Kansas

  • Under 132.5 (5 units)

Towson is one of the slowest teams in the nation when it comes to pace of play, at 361st, while Kansas is 256th, so both teams are methodical. The Jayhawks have gone under in seven of their last nine games. The Tigers are averaging just 61.3 points per game away from home, and Kansas is allowing opponents to average just 53.8 points per game at home.
