UCLA Hoping to Keep Dancing this Season

The UCLA Bruins are in their second season as members of the Big Ten Conference. The Bruins finished 23-11 overall last season, but accumulated seven of those losses in conference play. They finished a distant fourth in the Big Ten. This year, the Bruins have started fast, winning each of their first two conference games. That includes a 74-63 on Saturday night over a slumping Oregon squad. The Bruins jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead and rolled to victory. All five Bruins’ starters scored in double figures, led by Eric Dailey Jr., who finished with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Tyler Bilodeau netted 14 points, Skyy Clark and Donovan Dent had 13, and Xavier Booker finished with 12. UCLA held Oregon to just 34 percent shooting in the victory.

The UCLA Bruins will be facing one of their most challenging tests of the season when they visit the Zags on Saturday night. Thus far, the Bruins are 2-2 against teams from power conferences. The Bruins are 134th in the country in points per game this season. They are 78th in offensive efficiency in the nation. The Bruins are 57th in field goal shooting and 48th in 3pt shooting. Defensively, the Bruins are 15th in points allowed per game. They are 37th in defensive efficiency. The Bruins are 57th in the country in field goal defense and 106th in 3-point defense. The Bruins are 228th in total rebounds per game and they are 76th in turnovers.

Key Injuries: F Ugnius Jarusevicius is a game-time decision.

Bulldogs in a Familiar Place

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have been one of the elite programs in College Basketball for nearly the duration of head coach Mark Few’s tenure. This season, the Bulldogs are again off to a fast start, winning nine of their first ten games and ranked 8th in the country. On Sunday at home, the Zags pounded visiting North Florida 109-58. The win was Few’s 750th as Gonzaga’s head coach, now in his 27th season. He became the second fastest College Basketball coach to reach 750 wins. Playing without leading scorer Graham Ike, out with an ankle injury, Tyon Grant-Foster led the Zags with 19 points. Davis Fogle added 15 as the Zags won their second straight game in dominating fashion. Gonzaga dominated the glass against the overmatched North Florida team, outrebounding them 48-25. The Zags shot over 60 percent from the floor and held North Florida to 33 percent shooting..

The Zags, as they often have under Few, have played a solid non-conference schedule thus far. They are 6-1 against teams from power conferences, losing only to Michigan. The Zags are ninth in the nation in points per game. They are 7th in offensive efficiency. The team is 12th in field goal shooting and 91st in 3-point shooting. On the defensive end, the Zags are 19th in points allowed per game. They are fourth in defensive efficiency. The Zags are seventh in field goal defense and 14th in 3-point defense. On the glass, the Zags are third in the nation in rebounding. They are 66th in turnover per contest.

Key Injuries:  G Graham Ike is a game-time decision.

UCLA vs. Gonzaga Pick

Point Spread Pick for UCLA at Gonzaga

  • Gonzaga -10.5 (4 units)

The Zags have played a quality schedule thus far, including a 6-1 record against power conference teams. They are superior to the Bruins in nearly all offensive categories, particularly in scoring. The Zags are 9th in the nation in points per game, while the Bruins are just 134th. The Zags are also 7th in offensive efficiency and 12th in field goal shooting. Defensively, the Zags are strong as well. While the Bruins are 15th in scoring defense, the Zags are not far behind at 19th. More importantly than anything else, the Zags should dominate on the glass. They are ranked third in the country in total rebounds per game, while UCLA is ranked just 228th. The Bruins best chance to stay close will be through perimeter shooting. The Bruins are ranked 48th in the country in 3-point shooting. Unfortunately, the Zags are strong defensively beyond the arc. They are 14th in the country in 3-point defense. The Zags will rule the night on Saturday.

Take Gonzaga minus the points.

Over/Under Pick for UCLA at Gonzaga

  • Over 148.5 (5 units)

I expect the Zags to roll offensively in this matchup. The Zags have scored 91 or more points in each of their last five games, including three games of 100 or more points. UCLA has a solid defense, but they’ll struggle to keep the Zags off the glass on Saturday. The Zags will try to keep this one played quickly, they rank 3rd in pace of play. With their ability to dominate the glass, it will be difficult for UCLA to slow them down. As noted above, the Bruins’ best chance of hanging in this game will be from beyond the arc. Expect this one to sail over the total.

Take the over.
