Both teams enter the contest on three-game winning streaks. Iowa is a 5.5-point favorite, with the total set at 140.5. Getting the best college basketball picks is easy with our free college basketball picks.
Bilodeau leads the Bruins' surge
UCLA has found its stride under Mick Cronin, winning seven of its last eight games. The Bruins' offense has become much more potent lately, culminating in a 97-65 victory over UC Riverside.
The focal point is forward Tyler Bilodeau, who is coming off a monster 34-point performance. Bilodeau leads the team with 19.0 PPG and is a mismatch nightmare due to his ability to score both inside and out (54.8% FG). He is supported by a dynamic backcourt featuring Skyy Clark (14.2 PPG, 49.3% from three) and Donovan Dent, who leads the team with 6.6 assists per game.
UCLA's defense remains disciplined, allowing 68.9 PPG, but they will be tested by an Iowa team that ranks 3rd nationally in field goal percentage. To win, UCLA must control the boards, as they currently rank in the bottom tier of the Big Ten in rebounding margin.
Hawkeyes' efficiency defending home court
Under first-year head coach Ben McCollum, the Hawkeyes have transformed into a model of offensive and defensive efficiency. Iowa leads the nation in effective field goal percentage and ranks 4th nationally in scoring defense, allowing only 60.1 PPG.
The offense is piloted by Bennett Stirtz, who averages 17.1 PPG and 6.5 APG. Stirtz is coming off a 22-point, 8-assist showing against UMass Lowell and is the engine that drives Iowa's transition game. In the paint, Cam Manyawu provides a double-double threat and a rim-protecting presence that will be vital in containing Bilodeau.
One injury note: Freshman forward Cooper Koch is listed as out with an undisclosed injury. However, the Hawkeyes' depth has been a strength all season, with players like Tavion Banks (12.4 PPG) stepping up in expanded roles.
Spread pick for UCLA vs. Iowa
- Iowa -5.5 (-110)
Carver-Hawkeye Arena has become a fortress again under McCollum, and the Hawkeyes have been nearly perfect as home favorites this season (9-1 ATS). While UCLA is playing well, they have struggled in true road environments, going 1-2 so far. Iowa’s combination of elite ball movement (17.5 APG) and the #4 scoring defense in the country should allow them to pull away in the second half. Expect Stirtz to outduel the UCLA backcourt and for the Hawkeyes to cover the 5.5.
Total pick for UCLA vs. Iowa
- Over 140.5 (-108)
Both teams are averaging over 81 points per game, and while their defenses are solid, their offensive efficiency is simply too high to ignore. Iowa and its opponents have combined to break the 140.5 mark in eight games this year, and UCLA's recent games have trended heavily toward the high side (averaging 93 points over their last three). In a high-level Big Ten matchup with elite scorers like Bilodeau and Stirtz, the Over is the high-value play.
