UConn is a physical, versatile team

UConn (3-0 SU, 1-2 ATS, and 1-2 O/U) beat New Haven (79-55) and UMass Lowell (110-47) in its first two games. The Huskies continued to roll in their most recent game, beating Columbia 89-62. They jumped out to a 50-27 halftime lead, coasting to victory in the second half. Connecticut shot 57 percent overall, including 43 percent from deep, and assisted on 22 of their 30 made field goals.

The Huskies were 24-11 last season, finishing third in the Big East with a 14-6 conference record. They sought to become the first college basketball team to win three straight national championships since UCLA won seven straight (1966–67 to 1972–73), but lost to eventual champion Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. UConn is led by eighth-year head coach Dan Hurley, who has compiled a 168-69 record in Storrs.

The 2025-26 Huskies squad was picked to finish second behind St. John's in the Big East's preseason poll. They placed three players on the preseason All-BIG EAST First Team: junior guard Solo Ball (18.3 PPG and 4.0 RPG this season), senior forward Alex Karaban (17.3 PPG and 6.0 RPG), and senior center Tarris Reed Jr. (19.5 PPG, 10.0 RPG, and 3.0 BPG). Retaining all three was significant, along with junior forward Jaylin Stewart (8.0 PPG and 4.7 RPG). Hurley also strengthened the roster through the transfer portal and high school ranks. Silas Demary Jr. was a significant addition, as the Georgia transfer fills a need at point guard. The 6-foot-5 junior has a desired blend of size, athleticism, and work ethic, and averaged 19.0 points over the final 10 games last season. Another Huskie to watch against BYU is senior guard Malachi Smith (10.4 PPG and 5.3 APG at Dayton last season).

Connecticut Huskies Basketball Injury Report:Β Big East preseason Freshman of the Year Braylon Mullins is out several weeks (ankle). Fellow freshman guard Jacob Furphy (ankle) is also questionable to play against BYU after missing UConn's first few games.

BYU has tantalizing upside

BYU (3-0 SU, 1-2 ATS, and 0-3 O/U) defeated Villanova (71-66) and Holy Cross (98-53) in its first two games. The Cougars didn't slow down on Tuesday, beating Delaware 85-68 at home. They trailed 37-34 at halftime, but turned it on in the final 20 minutes, outscoring the Blue Hens by 20. The visitors shot a high percentage from beyond the arc, but were bullied on the boards, as BYU (+21 rebounding margin) collected 19 offensive rebounds.

Brigham Young went 26-10 last season, finishing in a tie for third place in the Big 12 with a 14-6 record. The Cougars earned a six-seed in the NCAA Tournament and lost in the Sweet 16 round to Alabama. Head coach Kevin Young is in his second season at BYU after spending several seasons as an assistant coach in the NBA, including a stint as Phoenix's associate head coach.

The 2025-26 Cougars team was selected to finish second behind Houston in the Big 12's preseason poll. True freshman forward AJ Dybantsa is in the discussion to be the number one pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The Massachusetts native is averaging 18.7 points on 57.5 percent shooting with 7.0 rebounds this season. He isn't the only reason expectations are high for the Cougs, who return significant talent and brought in several key pieces through the portal and high school ranks. Senior guard Richie Saunders (20.3 PPG and 7.0 RPG this season) and senior forward Keba Keita (6.7 PPG and 6.3 RPG) are the key returnees, as Saunders was first-team All-Big 12 and Keita made 67 percent of his field goal attempts. Sophomore guard Robert Wright III (18.3 PPG, 5.3 RPG, and 4.3 APG), a Baylor transfer, has boosted the backcourt rotation, and junior forward Kennard Davis (SIU transfer) offers additional scoring and rebounding depth.

Brigham Young Cougars Basketball Injury Report:Β G Kennard Davis missed BYU's last game (Achilles) and was arrested on suspicion of DUI on Thursday. It's unclear if he will play on Saturday against UConn.

UConn vs. BYU Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for UConn vs. BYU

  • Huskies -5 (5 Units)

Connecticut will be well-prepared for this game, which they will play in front of a pro-Huskies crowd. UConn has been efficient on both ends of the court through three games, ranking 4th nationally in offensive efficiency and 12th in defensive efficiency. They averaged over one point per possession in all three games, but I believe they're even better than that, as they can shoot a higher percentage from long range. Karaban is shooting a blistering 53.3% from deep, but a couple of other Huskies have yet to find their touch, as Ball (7-for-21) shot 41% last season, Demary (0-3) shot 37.4%. UConn will also be a force on the glass, as Reed ranked second nationally in offensive rebound percentage last season.

BYU's wing rotation will cause problems for most teams, including the Huskies. Dybantsa is an all-world athlete, but his shooting touch is questionable. The Huskies have made strides defensively, holding all three of their previous opponents under 1 point per possession, including 0.63 vs UMass Lowell. UConn will give BYU's fantastic frosh space in the half-court, preventing him from getting downhill and attacking the basket with ease. Smith and Demary are also solid perimeter defenders. Demary, in particular, will be impactful guarding the 6-foot-1 Wright, whose dribble penetration game is key to the Cougars' attack. The Baylor transfer dropped 22 on UConn last season, but the 6-foot-5 Demary will give him some trouble.

The distraction of Davis' situation doesn't help BYU, either. He was an underrated transfer portal addition, and his absence would impact the Cougars' defense. He missed the previous game due to Achilles soreness, so he may be limited even if he does suit up. With that said, I'm betting on Connecticut's experience to be the difference on Saturday in Boston. Bet on the Huskies to cover!

Over/Under Pick for UConn vs. BYU

  • Over 153 (4 Units)

Betting Trends: The over is 12-6 in BYU's last 18 games and 8-1 in its previous nine games as an underdog.

I lean towards the over in Saturday's primetime college hoops clash between UConn and BYU. I expect the Cougars to give the Huskies trouble defensively, as their wing group is elite. Keita led the Big 12 in offensive rebounding percentage last season, too. I'm also curious to see how aggressive the Huskies will be to hit the offensive boards. Keita is quick and athletic, and if UConn sells out for rebounds, Dybantsa will have a running start to push the basketball in transition for dunks, layups, and trips to the free-throw line.

As I mentioned earlier, UConn has shot a high percentage this season (55.6% overall and 39.1% from three), but two of its best three-point shooters are a combined 7-for-24. They are due for positive regression, and I won't be shocked if one or both find their rhythm again on Saturday night.
