UNLV Eyes Second Win of Season

The UNLV Rebels are seeking their second win of the season. It has been a disastrous start. The Rebels have managed just one win in three games, and they have yet to play against a dangerous squad. UNLV opened the season with a stunning upset loss against Tennessee-Martin. Next, the Rebels posted a 101-69 home win against Chattanooga. The woes continue in a 102-93 home loss by Montana last week in a clash that had the Rebels marked as big 10-point favorites. They shot 51% in the defeat. The Rebels have covered in one of three games.

Dravin Gibbs-Lawhorn has been outstanding. The junior guard scored 26 points in the defeat against Montana and has posted an average of 19 PPG. He has connected on 50% of his field goals in two of three games. Kimani Hamilton is in his first season wth UNLV. The senior forward has been steady, scoring double digits in all three games. He netted 16 in his previous game and is averaging 16 PPG on the year.

Nas Cunningham is having a promising start to his DI career. The freshman forward scored 25 points in the only win. Cunningham has issued an average of 15 PPG  Isaac Williamson has played in just one game. He missed the first two games and made his season debut against Montana, and amassed 11 points. Howie Fleming Jr. has shot 50% in two of three games. The senior guard has contributed with 6.3 PPG.

The Rebels are marked 116th in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. They were voted to finish 6th in the MWC preseason poll chosen by the media. UNLV is averaging 91.6 points per game, ranking them 36th. UNLV is shooting 51.1%. The Rebels' defense has been exposed in the 1-2 start. Opponents are shooting 49% against them. The Rebels are conceding an average of 85.6 points, pegging them 290th in DI.

Memphis Hit with First Defeat of Season

The Memphis Tigers are attempting to answer their first defeat of the season. It has been a challenging schedule in the opening few weeks for this group. They have played in just two games. They tipped off the season with a strong 76-70 home win against San Francisco to cover the two-point spread. Next, they had a potent opponent and were competitive, dropping an 83-77 road decision against Ole Miss. The Tigers were 10-point dogs in that one. They connected on 47% of their shots in the defeat.

Dug McDaniel was a key transfer in the offseason for the program. The senior guard was a big scorer with Michigan a few years ago and played with Kansas State last year. McDaniel scored 15 points against Ole Miss and has netted a total of 26 points on 33% shooting in two games. Sincere Parker is another new player. The senior guard played with McNeese State last year. Parker has been a threat, sinking 25 points on 52% shooting.

Ashton Hardaway has seen limited playing time in the past few years but is getting more minutes this year. The junior forward scored 16 points in the defeat against Ole Miss and has amassed 22 points in two games. Curtis Givens III struggled in the opener with only two points. He answered by scoring 20 points against Ole Miss. The sophomore guard is 3 for 9 from beyond the arc. Quante Berry was a key player for Temple last season. The junior guard is in a groove, recording 22 points, and has connected on 67% of his shots.

The Tigers are ranked 55th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings and were voted to finish 1st in the AAC preseason poll chosen by the coaches. Memphis is scoring an average of 76.5 points after two games, ranking them 275th. They are shooting a weak 42.9%. The Tigers' defense has been the issue in their two defeats. Spread Pick for UNLV vs. Memphis

  • Memphis Tigers -10 (5 units)

The UNLV Rebels are struggling early this season. They have managed just one win in three games. They were tabbed huge favorites in the two defeats, dropping games against Tennessee-Martin and Montana. The Memphis Tigers are considered the best team in the AAC this year. The Tigers won their opener, and there is no concern with the only loss, considering it was against  Ole Miss on the road in their second game.

Furthermore, the Rebels' defense has been abysmal so far. The Rebels are conceding 108 points per 100 possessions compared to only 98.7 points per 100 by the Tigers. Memphis is shooting 35.4% from deep, which is above average. Memphis should thrive from beyond the arc against a Rebels defense that is pegged 275th against threes.

Over/Under Pick for UNLV vs. Memphis

  • Over 162 (5 units)

I expect a shootout. UNLV is a team that leans on its scoring to win games. They are shooting a dazzling 51.1% on the season and have scored 101 and 93 points in their past two games. The Tigers' defense has been shaky. Opponents are shooting 41.9% from deep against the Tigers, pegging them 356th in the country.

In addition, Memphis has a potent offense with proven scorers. They also play at a quick pace, standing 60th in adjusted tempo. They were able to score 77 points against Ole Miss of the SEC on the road. They should have another big offensive output against a team that just squandered 102 points in their previous action. The over is a convincing 5-0-1 in the Rebels' past six regular-season games.
