The Aggies were picked to finish second in the Mountain West's preseason poll. They are led by second-year coach Ben McCollum, who compiled a 26-8 record last season, leading the team to the NCAA Tournament. Utah State scores 86.0 points per game (60th) on 52.8 percent shooting (2nd), including 38.6 percent from deep (17th). Defensively, the Aggies allow 66.8 points per game (24th) on 39.8 percent shooting (32nd), including 32.6 percent from long range (149th).

Utah State is led by senior guard MJ Collins Jr., a transfer who spent two seasons at Virginia Tech and one with Vanderbilt. He is averaging 20.1 points per game on 50.6 percent shooting, including 45.9 percent from three-point range. Grand Canyon (10-6 SU, 7-9 ATS, and 7-9 O/U) was uncompetitive on the road against New Mexico earlier this week, losing 87-64. The Lopes trailed by only five at halftime, but were blown away after the break. The Lobos shot 53 percent overall and held the Lopes to 34 percent from the field, as the visitors missed 20 three-pointers. The home team also won the rebounding battle 39-29 and outscored Grand Canyon by ten in the paint.

The Lopes were picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West's preseason poll. They are led by sixth-year head coach Bryce Drew, who has led the Lopes to a 130-46 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances, including three straight. Grand Canyon scores 74.8 points per game (269th) on 44.1 percent shooting (251st), including 29.8 percent from beyond the arc (337th). Defensively, the Lopes surrender 68.7 points per game (50th) on 42.5 percent shooting (126th), including 31.8 percent from long range (110th).

GCU is led by senior guard Jaden Henley, a transfer who previously played for Minnesota, DePaul, and UNLV. He is averaging 17.2 points on 47.4 percent shooting, with 4.8 rebounds per game. A few other Lopes to watch in Saturday's Mountain West game against Utah State are junior guard Makaih Williams (12.3 PPG and 2.1 APG), senior forward Nana Owusu-Anane (9.3 PPG and 8.8 RPG), and junior guard Caleb Shaw (8.5 PPG and 3.6 RPG).

Utah State enters this matchup with a significant momentum advantage that it should ride to victory. The Aggies outperformed their projected offensive efficiency number in six of their last eight games, including a +48-point efficiency differential two games ago. They rank sixth nationally in offensive momentum, per Haslametrics. They shoot a high percentage from three-point range, but do the majority of their damage inside the paint, ranking 21st nationally in near-proximity shooting percentage versus the average opponent despite taking the fifth-highest rate of near-proximity shots. Utah State also does an excellent job at creating extra scoring opportunities, as it ranks tenth in potential quick points off breakaway steals and second in second-chance conversion percentage. The latter is especially impactful for an Aggies team that grabs 35 percent of its potential offensive rebounds (34th).

Grand Canyon can be a stout defensive team, but Utah State will consistently challenge its bigs at the rim. The Lopes rank outside the top 100 in two-point defense and are 83rd in average opponent near-proximity shooting percentage. Considering that they're unlikely to win the turnover or rebounding battles, I don't expect them to have enough offense to keep pace with the Aggies on Saturday. The Aggies boast offensive momentum and have been solid on the road this season, ranking 49th nationally in Haslametrics' Away from Home metric. I feel confident they will have success against a Grand Canyon team that allowed 87 points, including 49 in the second half, in their last game. The Aggies' inside-out scoring attack has been one of the most efficient in the country, as six of their top eight scorers shoot over 50 percent from the field and four of their top five scorers hit over 35 percent of their threes.

If there's one area that the Lopes can stay in the game, it's via second-chance buckets off offensive rebounds. GCU ranks 63rd in offensive rebounding percentage, and Utah State can give up too many extra scoring chances, as the visitors rank 291st in average opponent second-chance conversion percentage. If some of those extra shots result in trips to the free-throw line, the Lopes can take advantage (28th in FT%).
