Vanderbilt Has High Hopes
The Vanderbilt Commodores have found success on the football field over the past two seasons, but are now looking for it to translate onto the hardwood coming into this year. Mark Byington will lead the team for his second year as head coach, after leading the team to a 20-13 record last season. SEC basketball is a difficult spot for any coach, but Byington looks to lead his team to more wins this year.
In their preseason game, they were led by 6'7 senior forward Tyler Nickel, who had 20 points in the opener and has been a well-traveled player coming into this matchup. Nickel played at UNC and Virginia Tech and is now the leading scorer for the Commodores, coming into his senior season. Devin McGlockton is a physical presence in the middle. The athletic forward grabbed 12 rebounds in his first game this season, while scoring six points in the paint.
Vanderbilt is currently ranked 16th overall according to KenPom. They rank 19th in offensive efficiency and 22nd in defensive efficiency. The early-season rankings are based on their projections for the year.

Knights Take on a New Season
The UCF Knights will look to defend their early-season start, as their opening game was not as impressive as they had hoped. UCF took on Hofstra in their opener, and while they won the game, they only secured a four-point victory, which was less than expected. The Knights are looking to make a name for themselves in the Big 12 this season, but they will need to get more impressive wins going forward.
In their opening game, UCF was led by Riley Kugel with 19 points. This was his first game at UCF after beginning his career with Florida and Mississippi State, but the 6'5 guard still has plenty of talent to give. Kugel averaged 9.3 PPG last season with Mississippi State before transferring to UCF. Jordan Burks is another scorer for the Knights; he had 17 points in their opener after transferring in from Georgetown.
UCF is ranked 73rd according to KenPom; they are 75th in offensive efficiency and 84th in defensive efficiency. The Knights play at a fast pace that has ranked 41st in the nation coming into this game.
Vanderbilt vs. UCF Picks and Predictions
Spread pick for Vanderbilt vs. UCF
- Vanderbilt (5 units)
The Commodores are the better team here and are taking their token out-of-conference game to UCF to meet their program needs. Vanderbilt absolutely rolled their opponents in the opening game, while UCF was lucky to pull off a four-point win against Hofstra. Vandy is an SEC team that will have more athletes, but more importantly, more scorers, including Nickel, who has been putting up numbers in college hoops for the past few seasons. Vandy is the stronger team and will cover this number on the road.

Over/Under Pick for Vanderbilt vs. UCF
- Under (4 units)
Both of these teams are trying to rebuild their programs. Vanderbilt is trying to become an SEC team that can compete with the big dogs, and UCF is clawing their way to the bottom of the Big 12. Each team has athletes, but no elite scorers, and the defenses will control the game coming into this one. Each squad had an easy round matchup, but will now face a much stronger offense where the defense needs to catch up. This will be a low-scoring game to start the season.
