VCU allowed Vanderbilt to shoot 53% overall and 50% from long distance. Michael Belle came off the bench to grab a team-best six rebounds, while two players had two assists each, as the Rams had just 8 assists, lacking sufficient ball movement. Virginia Tech needs to shoot better and play tougher defense
The Virginia Tech Hokies shot just 31% overall and 23% from 3-point territory in Thursday’s 11-point loss to Saint Mary's. Virginia Tech grabbed 34 rebounds but gave up 39 rebounds to the Gaels. The Hokies did not take advantage of their rebounding on the offensive glass, as Virginia Tech hauled down 18 offensive boards, but poor shooting hurt them in the end. Virginia Tech took good care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers and scoring 19 points off 15 turnovers committed by Saint Mary's, but still came up short on the scoreboard.
The leading scorer for Virginia Tech on Thursday was Amani Hansberry with 18 points, while Jaden Schutt came off the bench to score 17 points for the Hokies. Hansberry grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, and Ben Hammond handed out a team-best six assists. Before Thursday’s loss, Virginia Tech was scoring an average of 87.8 points per game and allowing an average of only 71.3 points per game. VCU Rams vs Virginia Tech Hokies Pick
Spread Pick for VCU vs Virginia Tech
-
VCU Rams (5 units)
VCU has covered the spread in three of its last four games, while Virginia Tech has struggled against the spread and is 3-4 ATS this season, but has failed to cover each of its last four after opening a season with three consecutive covers against weaker competition. VCU is scoring 84.4 points per game and will shoot well enough against a Virginia Tech side that is coming off a poor outing in which the Hokies shot only 31% overall and 23% from three-point land. Virginia Tech will keep the game close throughout, but down the stretch, when the pressure is on, poor shooting will do in the Hokies as VCU will open up a lead in the final five minutes of play.
Over/Under Pick for VCU Rams vs Virginia Tech Hokies
-
Under (4 units)
The total has finished under in five of VCU’s last six games. The total has finished under in each of Virginia Tech's last three games, including Thursday’s loss to Saint Mary's, when 143 points were scored against a closing line of 144 points. VCU knows how to play defense, and Virginia Tech is allowing just 71.3 points per game and holding opponents to 26.7% shooting from 3-point territory.
