A compelling matchup in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament tips off Thursday, as the No. 6 seed North Carolina Tar Heels (24-8) take on the No. 11 seed VCU Rams (27-7), champions of the Atlantic 10. North Carolina enters as a slight 2.5-point favorite, with the total sitting at 152.5. The VCU vs UNC game is one of the many great games on Thursday, but you can catch up on all the action with our free college basketball picks.

This is a classic power-conference vs. mid-major battle, but VCU is far from your typical double-digit seed. The Rams are one of the hottest teams in the country entering March, while North Carolina is dealing with adversity after losing its top player late in the season. With both teams ranking inside the top 50 in efficiency metrics and bringing balanced resumes to the floor, this matchup has all the makings of a tight, competitive game that could come down to execution in the final minutes. Check out our UNC vs VCU Prediction.

VCU is on a roll

VCU didn’t dominate out of the gate this season, but few teams are playing better basketball right now. The Rams have won 16 of their last 17 games, including a statement 70-62 win over Dayton to capture the Atlantic 10 title.

According to KenPom, VCU ranks 46th nationally, facing the 102nd-ranked strength of schedule. The Rams are well-balanced, sitting 46th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 59th on defense. They do a strong job taking care of the basketball and rank inside the top 70 in both offensive and defensive effective field goal percentage.

Offensively, VCU thrives on smart shot selection and getting to the line. The Rams are 14th in the country in free throw attempts relative to field goal attempts and shoot the ball efficiently from deep, ranking 35th in three-point percentage.

Terrence Hill Jr. leads the team with 14.4 points per game, while Lazar Djokovic adds 13.5 points and 5.4 rebounds, providing interior presence and rim protection. This is a disciplined, confident group peaking at the right time.

Tar Heels battling without Wilson

North Carolina enters the tournament ranked 30th in the country by KenPom, but the bigger storyline is the absence of star forward Caleb Wilson, who is out for the season. His loss (19.8 PPG, 9.4 RPG) has clearly impacted the Tar Heels, who dropped their final two games, including losses to Duke and Clemson in the ACC Tournament.

Despite that, UNC still ranks 32nd in adjusted offensive efficiency and 37th defensively, showing their overall balance. They also take care of the basketball, ranking 23rd in offensive turnover percentage. However, one glaring weakness is their inability to force turnovers, sitting 344th nationally on the defensive end in that category.

Henri Vassar has stepped up as the leading scorer with 16.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, while Seth Trimble contributes 14 points per contest. The Tar Heels played the 47th-ranked strength of schedule, so they are battle-tested, but the loss of their top player limits their ceiling.

Without Wilson, UNC loses a key interior presence and go-to scorer in tight situations.

VCU vs North Carolina Predictions

VCU vs UNC ATS Pick:

  • VCU +2.5 (5 units)

The play here is VCU plus the points, but I also think they win this game outright.

VCU is one of the hottest teams in the country, and momentum matters in March. They’re playing with confidence on both ends of the floor, while North Carolina enters off back-to-back losses and without its best player.

VCU also holds key statistical edges that should translate into a tight game. The Rams are significantly better at getting to and converting from the free-throw line, hitting just under 74% compared to North Carolina’s 68%. In a game projected to be close, that’s a major factor.

They also shoot the three-ball more efficiently and take care of the basketball, two areas that are critical in tournament settings. With North Carolina ranking near the bottom nationally in forcing turnovers, VCU should be able to operate comfortably in the half-court.

Add in the motivational factor that mid-majors always get up for programs like North Carolina, and this sets up perfectly for VCU to compete wire-to-wire.

VCU vs UNC Total Pick:

  • Under 152.5 (3 units)

Even with North Carolina’s offensive talent, this matchup sets up well for the under. The Tar Heels have gone under in over 59% of their games this season, while VCU has hit the under at a 56% clip.

In a tournament setting, expect a more deliberate pace late, with both teams locking in defensively. With North Carolina missing its top scorer and VCU comfortable grinding games out, points could be harder to come by down the stretch.
