The Wildcats meet the Golden Eagles for the first time this season. They split a two-game set last season, with each team grabbing a win at home. The last time they met, Villanova beat Marquette 81-66 as a 2-point underdog to snap its eight-game losing streak in this series.
Let’s take a closer look at this Villanova vs. Marquette prediction, one of our NCAAB picks for Saturday’s slate. The Wildcats are 5.5-point road favorites with a total of 144.5 points, and the tip-off is set at 2:30 PM ET.

Villanova’s winning streak is over
The Villanova Wildcats (12-3; 10-5 ATS; 7-8 O/U) are coming off Wednesday’s 76-72 home loss against Creighton. They blew a 10-point lead, allowing 46 points in the second half. It was one of their worst defensive displays of the season, and the Wildcats didn’t shoot the ball well either, going just 6-for-24 from beyond the arc.
Freshman guard Acaden Lewis tortured Creighton for 20 points and seven assists, while senior forward Duke Brennan double-doubled with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Wildcats put an end to their five-game winning streak, and during that stretch, Villanova has beaten Pittsburgh 79-61, Wisconsin 76-66 in overtime, Seton Hall 64-56, DePaul 71-66, and Butler 85-67.
Villanova is now 3-1 in conference play. Junior guard Bryce Lindsay is the team’s leading scorer with 16.0 points per game. Lewis averages 12.5 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.7 rebounds, and Brennan posts 12.3 points and 11.4 rebounds a night.
The Wildcats score 120.3 points per 100 possessions (34th in the country) and allow 100.9 points in return (51st). They rank 56th in the country in 3-point rate (.457) and 48th in 3-point percentage (36.6%). The Wildcats are No. 29 in the NCAA NET Rankings.
Marquette hopes to stay on track
The Marquette Golden Eagles (6-10; 4-12 ATS; 7-9 O/U) put an end to their six-game losing streak last Wednesday, outlasting Xavier 66-65 as 5.5-point home favorites. Marquette blew a 13-point second-half lead, but Ben Gold’s dunk with 46 seconds left on the clock lifted the Golden Eagles over the Musketeers.
Gold, a senior forward, finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Royce Parham led the charge with 14 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Chase Ross had 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists, five steals, and eight turnovers. Marquette went just 5-for-22 from deep and 9-for-18 from the foul line.
The Golden Eagles are now 1-4 in conference play. During their losing streak, the Golden Eagles have suffered defeats against Wisconsin 96-76, Purdue 79-59, Georgetown 78-69, Creighton 84-63, Seton Hall 79-73, and UConn 73-57.
Marquette is No. 158 in the NCAA NET Rankings. The Golden Eagles score 106.5 points per 100 possessions (203rd in the nation) and surrender 103.6 points in return (81st). Ross leads the way with 16.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, while freshman guard Nigel James adds 12.4 points and 3.9 assists a night.
Villanova vs. Marquette Pick
Spread Pick for Villanova vs. Marquette
- Villanova -5.5 (5 units)
The Wildcats love to shoot from deep, as I already noted above. They also love to crash the boards. Villanova is 44th in the country in offensive rebound percentage (36.3%). That should be a nice recipe for a win over Marquette. The Golden Eagles are 217th in defensive rebound percentage (67.8%) and 225th in opposing 3-point percentage (34.6%).
On the other side of the ball, the Golden Eagles have struggled a lot this season, making 47.9% of their 2-pointers (287th) and 29.5% of their 3-pointers (324th). Villanova’s 3-point defense is not elite (35.1%, 244th), but the Wildcats hold their rivals to 48.5% shooting from inside the arc (84th) and allow just 15.3 free throws per game (24th).
Hereof, I expect the Wildcats to win and cover. The Golden Eagles have been awful against the number lately. Marquette is 1-7 ATS in its last eight games overall and 0-5 ATS in its previous five showings at home.
Over/Under Pick for Villanova vs. Marquette
- Under 144.5 (5 units)
The Wildcats record just 63.4 possessions per 40 minutes (353rd). They take good care of the ball, so the Golden Eagles will have a tall task to force Villanova to run up and down the floor. Marquette registers 70.8 possessions per 40 minutes, and the Golden Eagles don’t turn the ball over a lot either.
Unless the Golden Eagles start to make shots, this game will go under the total. The under has hit in five of Marquette’s last six games overall, and the Golden Eagles haven’t hit a 70-point mark in five of those six contests. On the other side, the under is 7-2 in Villanova’s last nine road games.
