Hokies get trounced by state rival
Virginia Tech opened the season with five straight wins, and then reality struck when they had to leave Blacksburg for the Bahamas. The Hokies fell to VCU last Friday, 86-68, and to Saint Mary's on Thursday by 11. Tyler Johnson (16pts) and Amani Hansberry (16pts) led the Hokies against the Rams. Hansberry, a 6-8, 240-pound forward who played at West Virginia last season, averaged 14.6 points in that three-game tournament, which also included a 66-64 win over Colorado State.
Hansberry leads the team with 15.4 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 42.9% from the field. Injuries have also caught up with them as Tobi Lawal (6-8, 215), who began his career at VCU, missed that game due to an ankle injury. He's averaging 12.8 points and 10.3 rebounds with 1.7 blocks.
The Hokies is ranked 76th overall, 70th in Adjusted Offense, and 92nd in Adjusted Defense according to KenPom. Virginia Tech is 28th in assist-to-turnover ratio and 171st in rebound rate.
Gamecocks bounce back after struggling in West Virginia
South Carolina has two losses, and both took place at the Greenbrier Tip-Off Mountain Division from Sulpur Springs, West Virginia on Nov. 21-23. SC lost to Butler 79-72 on Nov. 21 and to Northwestern 79-77 on Nov. 23 (covered the 5). They bounced back last Friday with a 74-62 win over Charleston Southern, but didn't cover the 16. Elijah Strong led the way with 22 points off the bench. The Boston College transfer is averaging 10.1 points and is shooting 48.2% from the field.
The Gamecocks beat Charleston Southern despite shooting just 42% from the field and 21% (5 of 24) from long range. Offensively, they haven't been that bad, shooting 45.1% from the field and 32.1% (244th) from long range. South Carolina is ranked 89th overall on KenPom, 90th in Adjusted Offense and 98th in Adjusted Defense.
Meechie Johnson Jr. leads the team with 14.4 points and 3.4 assists, while Mike Sharavjamts adds 11.3 points and 6.6 rebounds. The 6-foot-9 Utah transfer shoots 38.1% from the three-point line. Myles Stute (7ppg) and Hayden Assemian (3.2ppg, 4.2rpg) missed the Charleston Southern game and are considered questionable with concussions.
Spread Pick for Virginia Tech vs. South Carolina
Virginia Tech vs. South Carolina Pick and Prediction
- Virginia Tech +1.5 (4 units)
South Carolina is not a very good basketball team. At least not at the elite level. South Carolina ranks 189th in rebound percentage. They are hindered in terms of depth, with Stute and Assemian possibly not playing. The Gamecocks were so bad in the SEC last season that they were a favorite just once against Arkansas late in the season and they had one of the best players in Collin Murray-Broyles, who is now in the NBA. Virginia Tech wants to push the ball, and they'll be able to after a week of rest.
Over/Under Pick for Virginia Tech vs. West Virginia
- Under 151.5 (4 units)
South Carolina is the more methodical team, ranking 259th in Adjusted Tempo. The Hokies are faster, but have gone under in four straight and five of their last six games. South Carolina is shooting just 33.6% from long range at home and the Hokies shoot 34.2% from long range overall. This is also Virginia Tech's first true road game so this could end up being a low-scoring rock fight.
