Strong Start for the Demon Deacons
Wake Forest heads into Ann Arbor on a 2-0 start after beating American University 88-74 and Morehead State 81-65.
The Demon Deacons finished 21-11 last season (13-7 in the ACC), but they missed the NCAA Tournament.
Wake Forest lost several key contributors from last season, including guards Hunter Sallis (18.3 ppg) and Cameron Hildreth (14.7 ppg), along with center Efton Reid (8.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg). Despite the talented losses, the Demon Deacons' mix of returning talent and newcomers has gotten them off to a strong start.
Leading the Demon Deacons through the first two games has been the duo of Juke Harris and Tre’Von Spillers, who returned for last season's squad. Harris is averaging 23 points and eight rebounds on 66.7% shooting, and Tre’Von Spillers is putting up 18 points and nine rebounds per game, while Mekhi Mason, a Washington transfer, has added in 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Wolverines dominant in opener
Michigan is led by head coach Dusty May, who led Florida Atlantic to the Final Four in 2023 and took over the program last season. In May’s first year with the program, the Wolverines went 27-10 (14-6 Big Ten), before their season ended with a Sweet 16 loss to Auburn. Michigan lost several key players from last season, including Vladislav Goldin (16.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and Tre Donaldson (11.3 ppg, 4.1 apg), but they have reloaded.
The Michigan Wolverines opened their season with a dominant 121-78 win over Oakland, and several of the Wolverines’ new faces had an excellent game. Morez Johnson Jr., a 6’9 sophomore transfer from Illinois, led the way in the opener with 24 points, while Aday Mara, a 7’3 transfer from UCLA, posted a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double. Four other Wolverines finished in double-figures scoring.
Wake Forest vs Michigan Predictions
Wake Forest vs Michigan ATS Pick:
- Wake Forest +13.5 (4 units)
Michigan is clearly the better team, but I’m not comfortable trusting them to win by 14+ points. Michigan’s opening game against Oakland was impressive, but they have also now had seven days without a game. The Wolverine offense could be sluggish to get going against a Demon Deacons team that was 34th in adjusted defensive efficiency last season, and is 50th through the first two games.
Wake Forest has shooting and athleticism to compete, and will be locked in to play Michigan on FS1. I will back the dog to cover the big number.
Wake Forest vs Michigan Total Pick:
- Under 164.5 (4 units)
There are plenty of offensive stars on both sides, but like the spread, this total also feels heavy.
Wake Forest will be on the road for the first time this season, and this will be the first true test for both teams. Both teams should come in focused, and we shouldn't see as many easy baskets as we have in the early games when these teams faced much weaker competition.
Last season, these teams combined for 142 points with a total set at 156, and I believe that we will get another under here.
