Washington aims for its third straight W
The Washington Huskies have already played twice this week. They started the season on opening night, beating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 94-50 as 34.5-point home favorites. Three days later, the Huskies beat Denver 84-70 at home, but they failed to cover a 27.5-point spread.
Washington bullied Arkansas-Pine Bluff last Monday. The Huskies held the Golden Lions to 25.4% shooting from the field while going 10-for-25 from downtown and 24-for-33 from the foul line. Freshman forward Hannes Steinbach led the way with 21 points and six assists, while sophomore forward Bryson Tucker double-doubled with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Last Thursday, Steinbach tortured Denver for 13 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Seven Huskies scored in double digits, but Washington’s defense wasn’t as sharp as it was against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Huskies return just 16.9% of minutes played and 19.8% of scoring from their 2024-25 roster. Last season, Washington went 13-18 overall and 4-16 in conference play, as the Huskies joined the Big Ten. It was Danny Sprinkle’s first year at Washington’s helm, and the Huskies ranked 110th in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency (109.8 points per 100 possessions) and 128th in adjusted defensive efficiency (104.5).
Baylor hopes for a better defensive display
The Baylor Bears started their 2025-26 campaign last Monday, beating UT Rio Grande Valley 96-81 in front of the home audience. The Bears failed to cover a 24.5-point spread and struggled to defend for most of the game.
Baylor was down 26-12 midway through the first half, but the Bears’ offense made a difference. They shot 49.2% from the field (11-for-30 from deep) and outrebounded the Vaqueros 42-26 on the night. The Vaqueros also made 49.2% of their field goals while going 11-for-27 from deep.
Junior guard Cameron Carr led the way for the Bears with 28 points and five rebounds. Freshman guard Tounde Yessoufou had 24 points and seven boards, while senior guard Obi Agbim posted a line of 16 points, five assists, and three boards.
The Bears have a brand new roster in 2025-26. All 14 guys from the previous season are gone. The Bears went 20-15 overall and 10-10 in conference play in 2024-25, scoring 121.3 points per 100 possessions (15th in the nation) and allowing 100.3 points in return (68th). They exited in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament, as Duke routed Baylor 89-66.
Washington vs. Baylor Pick
Spread Pick for Washington vs. Baylor
- Washington (4 units)
The Bears will need some time to gel, with all the new players on their roster. The Huskies made plenty of changes in the offseason, too, so they will need some time to figure things out as well.
Baylor’s defense was pretty bad on opening night, and Washington’s defense didn’t impress last time out. Hereof, I am looking for an interesting battle and will back the Huskies to keep it close.
Keep your eyes on Hannes Steinbach, as the 6-foot-11 German looks like a future superstar. The Huskies have another freshman at point guard, as JJ Mandaquit averages 7.5 points and 7.5 assists through his first two games.
Baylor has high hopes for its freshman Tounde Yessoufou. Obi Agbim was a star at Wyoming, while Cameron Carr was tallying just 4.8 points per game at Tennessee last season. Frankly, I don’t know what to expect from the Bears, especially early in the season.
Over/Under Pick for Washington vs. Baylor
- Over (4 units)
Last season, Baylor ranked 321st in the nation in pace (64.7 possessions per 40 minutes), while Washington was in the middle of the pack with 68.0 possessions per 40 minutes. I don’t expect to see significant changes in 2025-26, but I will take the over in this game.
As I noted, the Bears struggled to defend in their season opener. It looks like the Huskies have enough weapons to hurt the Bears, and Washington should look to push the ball in transition whenever possible. The over is 10-3 in the Huskies’ last 13 games overall and 7-1 in their previous eight outings on the road.
