Washington Looking to Beat Cougars for Third Straight Time

Washington battled but didn’t have enough in the tank to get by Baylor on the road in their previous contest on Sunday. The Huskies fell to 2-1 on the season and seek to regroup by downing their in-state rival for the third straight time. Against Baylor, Washington started strong, leading 11-4 with 15:46 to play in the first half. That was the high-water mark for the Huskies, who found themselves down 38-32 at intermission. They got within four on a couple of occasions in the second half, the last with 9:48 remaining, but couldn’t get any closer. Washington shot 41.2% from the field, including just three of 20 from beyond the arc, and turned the ball over a dozen times. Zoom Diallo led the Huskies with 15 points in the loss.

The Huskies are averaging 82.3 points per game on the season at this point in time, which puts them 159th in the nation in scoring offense. Washington is grabbing 44 rebounds a night while handing out 15.7 assists a night. The defense has been above average in Danny Sprinkle’s second season in Seattle as the Huskies are 91st in scoring defense as they are allowing 66 points a night. Hannes Steinbach leads four Washington players in double figures with 14.7 points and 12.7 rebounds per game this season. Wesley Yates III (11.7 points, three rebounds) and Zoom Diallo (13.7 points, 4.3 rebounds) are solid secondary scoring options. Quimari Peterson (11.7 points), Bryson Tucker, Lathan Somerville, JJ Mandaquit, and Franck Kepnang all have to be better contributors if Washington is going to have success. The Huskies shoot 46.9% as a team from the floor so far this season. Washington drains 6.7 three-pointers a game while shooting 30.8% from beyond the arc. The Huskies are average at the free-throw line as they shoot 71.4% as a team, putting them 168th in the nation.

Desmond Claude (ankle) has yet to take the floor this season and is out here. Tucker (undisclosed) is questionable.

Cougars Try to Even Record

Washington State regrouped from a pair of losses to open the season as they took down St. Thomas at home Monday night. The Cougars stand 1-2 on the year and aim to even their record with a win here. Against St. Thomas, Washington State scored the first 10 points and led wire-to-wire in the victory. The Cougars were up 50-30 at the half, pushed the lead to 26 with 18:22 remaining and were never threatened in the second half as they earned the win. Washington State shot 51.9% from the field, including 10 of 26 from three-point range, and dominated the boards by a 36-19 margin. Tomas Thrastarson led the Cougars with 19 points and seven rebounds in the victory.

Washington vs. Washington State Spread Pick

  • Washington -2 (4 units)

Washington State is coming off a win, and they are at home, but this team lacks the firepower that last season’s squad had. The Cougars won the rebounding battle against the smaller Tommies, but will have to contend with a pretty sound Huskies team on the glass in this one. Washington comes in off a road loss but falling at Waco isn’t anything to hang one’s head about. We’ve already seen Washington State lose at home to an Idaho team ranked 219th in the KenPom rankings. Washington is 170 spots higher than tha,t and they’ve had the Cougars’ number of late. Take the Huskies, even in Pullman, to head home with the win.

Washington vs. Washington State Over/Under Pick

  • Under 150.5 (4 units)

Washington has stayed under the number in two of their three games on the season. The Huskies are 55th in defensive efficiency, 63rd in effective field goal percentage defense (44%), and 85th in field goal percentage defense (38%) on the year. Washington State is 209th in field goal percentage, 273rd in three-point shooting, 214th in threes per gam,e and 324th in offensive rebounds per contest (8.7) on the year. It adds up to plenty of empty trips down the floor for the Cougars. Washington has their problems as well, especially from the perimeter, but they are good on the offensive glass. That can help them bleed clock with a lead, keeping this game under the number.
