Washington State is building offensive momentum

Washington State (11-15 SU, 13-12 ATS, and 13-12 O/U) lost 96-92 to Santa Clara in its last game, covering as 8.5-point spread underdogs. The Cougars hit 54 percent of their field goals, including 52 percent of their three-pointers, and won the rebounding battle 33-28. They couldn't get enough stops on defense, though, as the Broncos shot 56 percent overall and scored 48 points in the paint.

The Cougars are 4-6 straight-up and 7-3 against the spread in their last ten games. They are fifth in the WCC basketball standings with a 6-7 conference record. Washington State scores 80.6 points per game (120th) on 47.4 percent shooting (63rd), including 37.3 percent from beyond the arc (30th). Defensively, the Cougars allow 80.6 points per game (304th) on 462 percent shooting (295th), including 35.6 percent from three (301st). WSU ranks 126th nationally, including 79th in offensive efficiency and 239th in defensive efficiency, per KenPom.

Wazzu is led by freshman guard Ace Glass, who scores 16.5 points per game on 46.0 percent shooting. He also averages 3.3 rebounds per contest. A few other Washington State stars to watch on Tuesday against Gonzaga are junior forward Rihards Vavers (11.1 PPG and 3.7 RPG), junior forward ND Okafor (11.0 PPG and 5.7 RPG), and junior forward Eemeli Yalaho (10.6 PPG and 5.7 RPG).

Gonzaga can score with the best of them

Gonzaga (23-2 SU, 13-12 ATS, and 10-15 O/U) beat Oregon State 81-61 on Saturday, covering the spread as 19.5-point favorites. They dominated the Beavers on both ends of the court, knocking down 57 percent of their field goals and outscoring OSU 50-10 in the paint. Oregon State also lost the rebounding and turnover battles. The Bulldogs are second in the WCC hoops standings with an 11-1 conference record.

The Bulldogs were 26-9 last season, finishing second in the West Coast Conference with a 14-4 regular season record. They won the WCC Tournament, but couldn't sustain their momentum, losing in the second round of the NCAA tourney. Gonzaga is led by long-time head coach Mark Few, who has a 765-154 record in Spokane. The Zags are ranked 12th nationally by KenPom, including 22nd in offensive efficiency and 14th in defensive efficiency.

Gonzaga lost several key contributors from last season's squad, including veteran guards Ryan Nembhard (10.5 PPG and 9.8 APG) and Khalif Battle (13.6 PPG and 3.7 RPG). The Bulldogs aren't short on returning talent, though. Senior forward Graham Ike is the headliner (19.7 PPG and 8.5 RPG) to lead one of the country's most experienced college hoops squads (average age of 21.2 years old). Braden Huff, a 6-10 redshirt junior, has also been a force (17.8 PPG and 5.6 RPG in 18 games), but he is currently sidelined with a knee injury. Gonzaga has versatile, lengthy wings and plenty of depth after Few made several significant offseason additions through the portal and recruiting ranks. A few of the impactful newcomers are senior transfer wing Tyon Grant-Foster (11.3 PPG and 5.0 RPG), freshman guard Mario Saint-Supery (8.5 PPG and 3.9 APG), and senior transfer wing Jalen Warley (7.4 PPG and 5.0 RPG).

Washington State vs. Gonzaga Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Washington State vs. Gonzaga

  • Cougars +20.5 (5 Units)

The Bulldogs have dominated this series straight-up, but they have only covered the spread twice in the past ten matchups between these teams. They haven't been a great bet ATS this season, either. In their last ten games, they are just 4-6 ATS, including 1-4 ATS in their five most recent games. Washington State can keep the final score within 20 points with Huff still sidelined for the Zags, making them less intimidating around the basket. The Cougars rank 29th nationally in near-proximity shooting percentage, and paired with their high percentage from three-point range, they are certainly a capable offensive squad.

Gonzaga enters Tuesday's matchup ranked 346th nationally in momentum, per Haslametrics. Washington State ranks 65th, including 28th in offensive momentum. I'll take the points with Wazzu!

Over/Under Pick for Washington State vs. Gonzaga

  • Over 157.5 (4 Units)

If the Cougars cover the spread, I believe they will push the total over 157 points. They will fare better offensively in the second matchup between these teams, scoring more points around the rim and knocking down enough threes to give the Bulldogs a test. Gonzaga is certainly up for the challenge offensively, as it's one of the most efficient offensive teams in the country. The Zags easily won the rebounding battle in game one, and they'll dominate on the glass again on Tuesday. That's impactful for a team that excels at scoring easy buckets off offensive rebounds (12th in second-chance conversion percentage).

The over is 7-3 in Wazzu's last ten games. Bet on a higher-scoring game on Tuesday at The Kennel!
