Tuesday is full of important conference matchups, including this West Virginia vs. Oklahoma State prediction. When it comes to the best conference in the nation, you always have a chance as long as you can finish .500 in the conference. That's not necessarily the case with West Virginia (16-11, 7-7 Big 12) due to a low NET Ranking, which travels to Stillwater to meet Oklahoma State (16-11, 4-10 B12) on Tuesday night at 7pmET. This will be the first meeting of the season between the two programs, as last season, the Mountaineers were victorious in their only matchup, 69-50, from Morgantown. Crucial game for Mountaineers

West Virginia comes into this game coming off two straight losses to Utah at home as a 10.5-point favorite and at TCU 60-54 on Saturday on the road. At 63 in the NET Rankings, they are on the outside looking in due to their latest losses. The Mountaineers desperately need to beat Oklahoma State, but with BYU coming up at home on Feb. 28, followed by K-State and UCF, they have to go at least 3-1 and then probably win a game or two in the Big 12 Tournament.

They did beat UCF on the road on Feb. 14, but the loss to Utah (117 NET) was devastating. West Virginia is pretty healthy coming into this matchup, led by Honor Huff, a 5-10 transfer from Chattanooga, who averages 15.5 points, but shoots just 36% from the field (35.6% 3pt). Brenen Lorient, a 6-9 transfer from North Texas, adds 11.2 points and 5.1 rebounds, while shooting 52.5% from the field.

The Mountaineers rank 59th overall on KenPom, 151st in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and 21st in Adjusted Defense. West Virginia ranks 108th in total rebounding percentage.

It's now or never for the Cowboys

While West Virginia still has life, Oklahoma State is near the end of the line. After upsetting BYU at home (with Richie Saunders) on Feb. 4, the Cowboys proceeded to lose five straight games and not all came against the elite of the Big 12. Ok State fell at Colorado 83-69 in their last game on Saturday, as a 3.5-point dog. Their best player is Anthony Roy (17ppg), but he struggled against the Buffs, going 3-of-10 from the field and 0-of-7 from the three-point line to finish with six points. Oklahoma State shot just 5 of 23 from three-point range and committed 15 turnovers.

At 83 in the NET Rankings, they are not in the greatest shape, but if they can shock Houston on March 7 and beat Cincinnati and UCF on the road, they have a chance to sneak into the Big Dance. Parsa Fallah is the second-leading scorer on the Cowboys with 14.5 points per game, while shooting 59.9% from the field and 38.5% from long range. Three-point shooting (33.8%) is not a strength, nor is their three-point defense (258th). KenPom has the Cowboys ranked 73rd overall, 66th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and 103rd in Adjusted Defense. In total rebounding percentage, the Cowboys rank 162nd.

Spread Pick and Prediction for West Virginia vs. Oklahoma State

West Virginia vs. Oklahoma State Odds and Prediction

  • West Virginia +1.5 (4 units)

Neither team is playing well down the stretch, but this league is a monster. There are no easy outs, which is why the Big 12 is ranked first in the nation. The Mountaineers have the edge on defense as they are holding teams to just 41.1% from the field. They also have the edge on the boards at 144th in rebound margin (+2) compared to 198th for the Cowboys (+0.7). Oklahoma State also surrenders 81.1 points per game at home, so they want a fast pace, but they struggle to stop teams with good offenses. A Mountaineers' win keeps them in the conversation for a tournament berth, while Okie State just has too much to overcome.

Totals Pick for West Virginia vs. Oklahoma State

  • Under 141.5 (4 units)

This is a battle of contrasting tempos. Oklahoma State ranks 10th in Adjusted Tempo, while West Virginia ranks 362nd. Despite their pace, the Cowboys have gone under in two straight, four of five games and seven of their last nine games. West Virginia has gone under in 10 of their last 11 games. They've scored less than 60 points in six of their last eight games.
