West Virginia ranks 7th nationally in defensive efficiency

West Virginia (5-0 SU, 2-3 ATS, and 1-4 O/U) has beaten Mount St. Mary's, Campbell, Lehigh, Pittsburgh, and Lafayette. In their last game, the Mountaineers shot 50 percent from the floor and held the Leopards to just 25 first-half points. WVU averages 72.8 points (311th) on 44.8 percent shooting (213th), and its opponents average 54.8 points (3rd) with a 37.5 percent field goal mark (38th).

WVU was 19-13 last season, including 10-10 inΒ Big 12 competition. The Mountaineers were led by first-year head coach Darian DeVries, who spent the previous six seasons coaching Drake into a Missouri Valley Conference title contender and NCAA tourney team. While the expectation was that he would be in Morgantown for years to come, DeVries unexpectedly bolted in the offseason for Indiana. The Mountaineers hired Ross Hodge, who spent the previous two seasons leading North Texas, to be his replacement. North Texas excelled defensively under Hodge, holding its opponents to 60.1 points per game last season, the third-fewest in the country. Defense will always be key in the Big 12, and especially for West Virginia this season with a new-look roster.

WVU, picked to finish 11th out of 16 teams in the conference's preseason poll, features several impactful newcomers. Senior forward Brenen Lorient (16.3 PPG and 9.7 RPG this season) started his college basketball career at Florida Atlantic and excelled last season under Hodge at North Texas, scoring 11.9 points with 4.9 rebounds per game. He also averaged about a block and a steal per game and will be tasked with wearing a few hats for the Mountaineers. Senior point guard Jasper Floyd (11.3 PPG and 4.0 APG) was Hodge's floor general at UNT, and senior shooting guard Honor Huff (15.7 PPG) arrives via Chattanooga, where he led the nation in three-pointers made last season. A few other key contributors are senior forward Treysen Eaglestaff (18.9 PPG at North Dakota), 7-foot senior center Harlan Obioha (9.2 PPG and 6.0 RPG at UNC-Wilmington last season), and freshman forward DJ Thomas (6.7 PPG this year).

West Virginia Mountaineers Basketball Injury Report:

  • Senior transfer Chance Moore will be eligible for the first time after sitting out the first five games of the season. The 6-6 guard averaged 13 PPG and 6.5 RPG at St. Bonaventure last season.
  • Senior forward transfer Jackson Fields (hand) is questionable. He hasn't played yet this season.

Clemson has a brand-new roster this season

Clemson (4-1 SU, 2-3 ATS, and 2-3 O/U) has defeated New Hampshire, Gardner-Webb, Morehead State, and North Alabama, falling 79-74 to Georgetown in its lone loss. In the Tigers' most recent game, they jumped out to a 45-22 first-half lead and never looked back. UNA shot just 37 percent overall, including 25 percent from deep. Clemson scores 84.6 points per game (175th) on 46.0 percent shooting (175th), and its opponents average 58.6 points per game (7th) on 35.5 percent shooting (15th).

The Tigers went 27-7 last season, including 18-2 in ACC play (tied for second place). On the heels of an Elite Eight appearance, expectations were high, but they were upset by 12-seed McNeese State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Clemson is coached by Brad Brownell, who has compiled a 296-197 record in his 16 seasons at the helm. His 2025-26 squad was picked to finish seventh in the ACC's preseason poll.

14 players from last season's Clemson team departed in the offseason, with some going pro and others transferring or retiring from basketball. While the Tigers return three scholarship players, two redshirted last season. Brownell was active in the transfer portal and recruiting scenes, adding six transfers and four frosh. Forward Nick Davidson is the team's top transfer addition, as the 6-10 senior averaged 15.8 points and 6.5 rebounds at Nevada last season. Forward RJ Godfrey, who started his career at Clemson but spent last season at Georgia, transferred back during the offseason and is averaging 10.8 points and 6.6 rebounds this season. A few other players to watch on Friday against West Virginia are junior forward Carter Welling (11.4 PPG and 6.4 RPG), freshman guard Ace Buckner (11.0 PPG and 4.0 RPG), and junior forward Jake Wahlin (9.4 PPG and 5.6 RPG).

Clemson Tigers Basketball Injury Report:

  • No injuries to report for Friday's game against the Mountaineers.

West Virginia vs. Clemson Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for West Virginia vs. Clemson

  • Tigers -4 (4 Units)

Both teams are stout defensively (ranked 7th and 20th nationally in defensive efficiency) and deep. WVU has had five different players as leading scorers in its five games, with four scoring at least 20 points. Clemson has eight players averaging between 6.6 and 11.4 PPG, and its reserves have accounted for more than 40 points three times this season. So, which team will be more resilient in this neutral court tournament matchup?

I lean towards Clemson's side. The Tigers' size will challenge the Mountaineers, with the 6-10 forwards Welling, Wahlin, and Davidson providing a punch in the paint. They will be a tough matchup for West Virginia (216th in total rebounding) on the boards, as they rank 27th in total rebounding, including 18th in offensive rebounds per game (13.4). The Tigers also take great care of the basketball (third-fewest turnovers per game) and share it, ranking second nationally in assist/turnover ratio (2.47). In a matchup between two talented teams, those advantages will make the difference. Bet Clemson to cover!

Over/Under Pick for West Virginia vs. Clemson

  • Under 134 (4 Units)

These teams are also eager to prove themselves, as the Mountaineers are playing their first game away from Morgantown, while the Tigers seek a statement win after losing their first big test against Georgetown. They will play a hard-fought, competitive, and low-scoring tournament game. The Tigers and Mountaineers are among the slowest-paced teams in college basketball, ranking 342nd (Clemson) and 343rd (West Virginia) in possessions per game. If you enjoy watching teams like St. John's and Florida, you may want to find another form of entertainment. In all seriousness, though, this game will be interesting, as their similar paces and lockdown defensive mentalities will result in a fun battle. With that said, the under is my recommendation for the total!
